Penny... Memphis...

Two players just asked for their release from Arkansas. One plays on Hardaway's AAU team. Coincidence?

Arkansas did not change coaches so I suspect the Hogs might not grant that release. There has been bad blood between Arkansas and Memphis since Keith Lee, Ron Heury , and Todd Day.

Quote from Hogville board...."Mike absolutely needs to block a transfer to Memphis. He can’t just let this AAU fraud Penny come and poach our team.'

They think tampering is occurring for sure.

Their release has already been granted and no restrictions were placed on their transfer destinations per Coach Anderson.

Mike will probably be in Memphis every day recruiting the city players for Arkansas from now on. I know Eddie and Nolan both had a lot of trouble with Memphis "agents".

Arkie U. gave the release, so now they can go after Penny for tampering... This gives them a case. Although it might not work out too well for those 2 players, but if I am an Arkie fan...who cares!

I hear the “tampering” claim all the time when it comes to college athletics. How many cases is it proven AND results in substantial penalties? At this point I’m highly skeptical of any sanctions being levied in the future.

Is it really tampering if everyone knows the down low of the whole situation. Pandering to the situation may be a better description. The writing is all over the wall regarding how things are done and going to be done in the future at Memphis.

Their coaching hires paint the entire picture and it's been quite a ride on the coaching front over the last 15 years for the tigers beginning with crooked Calipari to the whinny weasel Pastner and then running squeaky clean Tubby out of town so you can bring in what may turn our to be the most obvious example of violations, present and future, in Hardaway.

Hopefully since our league isn't one of the P5 the NCAA will continue their trend of turning their head away from the P5's and hammering the "lesser" conferences.

the top rated AAC class sure doesn't look like a 'train wreck' to me...It's important for folks to realize when they're wrong.
Or when they were right that Penny was steering them all away from Memphis in search of a job.

It doesn't take much to out recruit grandpaw Tubby...
Yeah, using disparaging remarks towards Tubby recruiting methods doesn't change Penny's underhanded sabotaging of Tubby's Memphis/Tennessee recruiting. Destined to fail before he started. Only thing he really did wrong was the handling of his son/Lawson situation.

If you aren't willing to put your all into recruiting, Memphis isn't the place for you...his handling of the Lawson situation was just another example of why Tubby was a bad fit. I wish him well at HPU.

Firing your best recruiter and only tie to Memphis area basketball and replacing him with your kid was beyond stupid. Tubby was doomed from that moment in Memphis. In hindsight....he never should have left Tech.

I thought he was a bad fit from the start, but the Penny fiasco, and the administration not carrying through with their ok'ing of expectations made it impossible. He said it was a rebuild situation that wouldn't be resolved in a year or two and they said they understood. Then they didn't follow through when Penny made it worse. That compounded the bad fit.

It wasn't all Tubby's fault. If Tubby had received some support and wasn't fighting against Penny's backstabbing, he would have probably received a commitment or two from some of those Memphis recruits and it might have been a totally different situation.

yes it was...he ran off the fans making it impossible to keep him. He wasn't fired because he didn't win enough...He was fired because he could barely draw 4500 people to the games and refused to put any effort into recruiting.

he literally said "It's not my job to sell tickets"

Getting a few Memphis recruits and winning a few more games would have put more in the stands. You just can't admit the program, Penny, and the administration had any fault in the situation can you? It was not all Tubby's fault. I'm through here.

It will be a train wreck when your team is sitting at home on NCAA probation.

fans don't want to see Memphis lose by 20 at home to South Florida so they just stop buying tickets and stay home...that falls squarely on the feet of the HC.

Memphis is a very unique job. Folks like Larry Finch and Calipari understood that. Penny seems to understand that. Tubby did not. He simply wasn't a good fit as the Memphis HC.

Bowen never should have offered him the gig and Tubby never should have taken it. That said, we seem to be recovering nicely under Penny.

word is Penny is about to hire former Toronto Raptors HC, and 2007 NBA Coach of the Year Sam Mitchell as Assoc HC.

Man I would have figured he would have just retired, hope I'm that healthy at his age

He's 66 not 77 like Larry Brown. I think you wouldn't make that statement at 40 or 50 years of age. 65'ish was old in my grandmother's era, not so much now.

66 is still not young, most people are retired by then, if I had the money he just got, I would be buying a big ranch and building a nice house to enjoy life

Some people like what they do. He gets to coach a couple of more years at his alma mater. Ain’t nothing wrong with that.

If I had the option, I’d go teach a class at TU and give some dopes the bidness in the court room from time to time.

Nothing wrong with it, just saying what I would do, good for him

same with Penny. He's worth

Your fine man, i like hearing what's going on with others in our conference anyway. It's not like your an Oklahoma State fan trying to convince us Tulsa is worthless because we aren't " P5"

It’s been many years and several jobs since Tubby was a great coach. He was good at Minnesota and good to maybe very good at Tech. Which is fine for a program wanting to win 20-23 games a year but Memphis has illusions of grandeur. It was always a strange hire.

It's 'delusions of grandeur' and it's only a delusion if you can't really do it...Memphis has recruited at a high level and made deep NCAA runs several times before.

Yeah the last deep one was also vacated because Calipari cheated to get those kids there.

Cut the crap - you’re here looking for a TU fan to say something that you can take offense to and then act like you’re telling us off...

I’m glad we’re in a conference with you guys, Memphis is a cool city and you guys have a passionate fanbase, but you’re not doing anyone any favors by acting like a dbag here.

Uof Memphis: When your righteous board Dockery Finch started name calling Saul as Tubby's bald-ass son, your board lost all credibility and you as well. No place for that. You can complain about coaching and recruiting all you want but personal attacks are juvenile.

I never said any of that...

Yeah, how dare you throw him in with the rest of his board...

All he did was call Tubby Grandpa in reference to his recruiting...

No it’s an illusion of grandeur, something that you believe you see or experience that turns out never to have been real at all. Like your 2007-2008 season. When you have to cheat to succeed, it’s not real success, it’s an illusion.

I now hate Memphis even more. Who can forget their "we are too good" fans here for CUSA and the HUGE cheer that went up in the arena when UH upset them and sent their sorry behinds back home.

They are Memphis. They have only been good when they cheat. That is what they are all about.

There’s no doubt that Memphis will be talented come 2019. Now can Penny coach?
