ORU game thread

First time I've had to watch more than 5 minutes of game...

Wheeler is not impressive tonight. Out of control and not very quick.

Magnay is a potential star.

Henderson is better than I thought at the PG position.

Birt is Birt.

I am disgusted that one of the best players on the court is always the kid from ORU that wanted to come to Tulsa but Tulsa didn't want him. Shameful. I'm tired and disgusted seeing that every damn year it seems.

It's because you don't watch TU basketball enough except during ORU's super bowl. It's literally impossible to understand the game of basketball and reach that conclusion in watching 5 mins of one game in a season.

Wheeler is a bit out of control tonight driving into traffic. Just turned it into a 3 pt play though.

Nice to see Atson contributing meaningfully. And our performance so far without a PG.

Wheeler has game. Just not real quick.
I like what I'm seeing in Henderson a lot.
And Etou is good.

Honestly... Player for player, this is the most complete team Tulsa has had since Uzoh/Jordan and Hurtt days.

The young ones need to play hungrier on defense and this team could surprise some folks.

This team has the potential to compete in conference, it just depends on how they progress.

Defensive rotation needs to get a lot better. Taplin goes through stretches of lazy D where he reaches a lot and picks up cheap fouls. We get a lot of contributions from a lot of different guys. There have been several combos where I thought there were 4 and 5 legit options to score the ball unlike last year when there was Woodard, Shaq, and Birt consistently and you hoped you'd get some points from Smith and Ray to help things out and anything from Swannegan and Wright were bonus points. There are a lot of guys who can contribute points this year. Atson has some game as we saw tonight, Korita makes some nice contributions, Wheeler, Henderson, Birt, Etou, Igbanu can all score too. This team's success will depend on its ability to gel as a defensive unit.

Top to bottom I think you have to go back to Self era to find a TU roster with such raw talent, practically everyone can create and shoot. A lighting quick PG and defensive principles are the missing pieces. The defense will come w/ experience, hopefully the PG arrives next season.

Etou reminds me of a quicker version of David Shelton.

And taller and can jump (re: Etou/Shelton comparison)

Does Al's horse race still have us hiring Nolan again?

As tough as it is for me to say, congratulations on the win last night. Good to see Basplayr and a few other TU friends.

Smallest crowd in Mayor's Cup history. Maybe 3,000. Seems like interest in college basketball, in this city, is at an all-time low. Honestly, I may be more sad about that than the outcome of the game.

This is a great point. It's a bizarre issue. We struggle so much with football and basketball attendance. It's like people have moved on to other forms of entertainment or just don't leave their homes. I think the casinos and Thunder really hurt.

But then you blamed the attendance on TU on your board. Not cool.

I still don't like the series in its current format. Many very large schools don't draw well in November/December pre-conference. Relatively speaking OU and OSU's actual attendance is just as poor.

The quality of the refereeing at Mabee has been from horrible/suspicious to just poor over the years. I still think TU should insist on a 2-1 or 1-1-1 and play the game every other year.

But then you blamed the attendance on TU on your board. Not cool.

I said BOTH fan bases were to blame.

The fact is, most TU fans probably live closer to the Mabee Center than the Reynolds Center. And, last year's Mayor's Cup game at TU was less than 5,000.

Attendance/interest is very low at BOTH places.

Mmmkay.

We usually don't do well on attendance until the conference season. Part of that is football. Part of that is laziness. All the TV games hurt. And some is these external factors that seem to erode attendance every year.

The part about most TU fans probably living closer to ORU is fact. I know several TU alum who regularly attend more ORU basketball games because of the location and ease of getting in and out. Which I think is ridiculous because I know from where I live in South Tulsa I can be at TU in 10 minutes. Now the ample FREE parking around the Mabee Center is probably the one thing that most die hard TU fans envy.

If TU had that parking lot, we would have a sellout crowd whenever we had a winning record

I do think television is the major culprit in the decline in attendance at college sports events. I don't think we will ever see a return to what attendance was in the 70s and 80s before the proliferation of televised games.

All sports, even the mighty NFL has over saturated the market. Thinking about getting rid of the Thursday Night Game.

GO TU!!!

A lot of truth in that.. but today there is so much more competition for dollars and attention.. the average fan wants to see the NBA every night.. the average kid wants to see nba2k17 on the floor... I see it in my kids games.. everyone wants to see the slashing drives, few appreciate a well run offense and smothering defense.. they want home runs, not bunts.. overpowering fastballs, not artful pitching.. a top ten highlight on every play, because that's what sports center and YouTube provide..

Dollar wise... there are so many restaurants, movies, casinos, concerts, Netflix, Hulu,... that entertainment money only goes so far..

Short budgets and shorter attention spans.. not a good mix.

I also think there is the LeBron effect. People aren't as loyal to one team anymore. People run to the next big thing. Who would have thought the Cubs and Golden State would become popular? Unless TU has a guy on those Top 10 plays every night, why go? And only go if it doesn't conflict with the other flavor of the month on tv.

The NFL is not having a game attendance issue (except in Jacksonville but we all knew that was going to happen). The NFL is having a game watching issue. Honestly, some of the games they have been putting on TV have been downright dogs of games. I was pretty hacked when they moved the Pats/Jets game off the of the Sunday night slot this past week for Denver and KC, but then again that game was a great game to watch (not that the Pats/Jets game was a bad game to watch).

I was in San Diego two weeks ago. Qualcom had about 50K in a 70K+ stadium.

I get your point about attendance, the NFL ratings are way down, probably because of over saturation.

I'm not exactly sure San Diego is any better of a sports town than Jacksonville is at this point. They are fickle and they have refused to pitch in to keep the Chargers for a good number of years. I am shocked Dean Spanos is still there TBH. That place is old and pretty much a dump by today's stadium standards. It's one of the last cookie cutter stadiums left from the 60's/early 70s. It's also a ways out there where most stadiums now are being built close to downtown or in a confluence of transportation. Dallas and Arizona got away with not being downtown by building architectural wonders. San Diego has done nothing where everyone else has done something. Add to it that the Chargers just aren't very good (sorry Dex) and no wonder the stadium was 1/3 empty.

Chargers are moving to LA playing in the new stadium with the Rams. At least that is what everyone in SD says.

GO TU!!!
