There has got to be something structurally wrong with his knee joint. I have torn 2 ACLs, but only one had a meniscus tear with it. That knee routinely gives me some trouble after physical activity. My ortho said its easier to keep aggravating the meniscus part but the ACL should be stable (and not need bracing after a year) if the surgeon is skilled. I remember Reggie Lewis (Celtics) had a scope to repair some meniscus damage and he was out 2 weeks and came back fine. They actually showed a portion of the surgery on local TV in Boston when it happened...pretty cool. It was more the fraying where they clean it up as the frayed ends could get pinched between the bones involved and be quite painful. However, tears can be pretty significant depending on how long the tear is, how much has come loose, and what the repair process is (suture vs. anchor or both).

Sometimes the angle of the femur into the knee joint is such that the joint is more susceptible to recurring injuries. You see this more in females because of the angle the femurs are at because of the broader pelvic/hip joint. The sudden jump stop is a primary culprit in basketball players as the feet stick but the momentum created by the body continues motion and pressure against the knee joint and to a lesser extent the hips and torso.
