Texas is so full of themselves. Terry is an excellent basketball coach and even they feel the NIL BS because he is having to replace 8-10 players every season too (some NIL, some 1 and dones). And I just saw that Xavier hired Richard Pitino as their new HC...that should be a fun battle when he squares off against dad.
There's a rumor that Cronin might be taking the Villanova job. I'm not sure he enjoys the big city lights of LA so much plus there is the added ipressure of being John Wooden at UCLA and that is simply not happening in this climate. And I think the B1G travel for UCLA is probably really crappy for basketball.
UCLA is delusional. $50 million in deficit spending every year for the last four years. Doubling their debt to a disputed $400 million. During that time that have dramatically increased spending, partly to cover interest on previous spending. Still last year, despite a projected $45 million deficit they actually exceeded, they hired 13 additional coaches for revenue negative sports, remodeled their athletes only dining facility, made upgrades to revenue negative housing, and spent additional discretionary sums in academic support like new electronics.
Men’s Basketball’s share of the debt was greater than the entire budget of the Tulsa Bball program, if you count salaries and not counting NIL. Still they added a trip to Hawaii and several games on the east coast.
The Big 10 is making them spend $15 million on facilities upgrades including a TV studio. The school gave them that money and more to cover debt payments. $30 million total in additional direct support.
Ticket sales, donations, logo licensing and fee payments like parking and bookstore sales all way down over last four years.
Overall revenue has been about 30% less than 2019 the last few years in the aggregate.
The California political leadership makes them cut off $10 million a year for other schools at lower levels.
They left Leerfield and got another broadcast partner because revenue was dramatically down. Leerfield itself might fold.
In kitchen table logic, their spending has gone up $30 million this past year and revenues have declined $30 million. Debt is three times operating budget.
But they give every freshman bball player $1 million, because they won a bunch of basketball games in the 60’s and 70’s when nobody cared much about basketball and most still don’t.
And they are in relatively good shape amongst large P2 schools. They have the yearly Big 10 check to stay afloat.
There are schools in the Big 12 in similar condition who have no idea if they will be the next Oregon State or not in 3 years.
If Cronin leaves, it won’t be because of the extra free trips to Hawaii, that’s for sure. It will be because they got housed by Tennessee and their checks might start bouncing.
