Takeaways -

1. Beat a nationally ranked team after being down by a large margin.
2. Home crowd enthusiasm peaked during this period in TU football.
3. Offensive play calling and execution was excellent. Our OC could learn something here.

The thing that really impressed me during that game was our second half adjustments. We used A&M’s speed and over pursuit against them. The momentum and initial step one way on the pitch to Hughley, with the o-line sealing off as he cut back against the grain was beautiful to watch. Once the running game clicked it opened up the passing game. One of the best coaching adjustments I have seen in TU history. Yes Dave Radar could coach when given the tools.

It was a shame that he didn't get another shot as HC of another program, after he was disadvantaged by the players he could recruit at TU.

And to think Rader turned down the job at Baylor.

Billy Cole had a huge special team day, with the tackle at the 10 after Hughley's 51 TD run, then the forcing and recovery of the fumble after Tulsa took a 35-34 lead late.

He had another shot at an HC job when he was OC and babysitter at Alabama. But they were so riddled with probation and he was such an outsider it wasn’t really a fair situation. He’s always struck me as some genius scientist who can’t get the ideas out of his head because the technology doesn’t exist yet. I don’t know a lot of coaches outside the TU tree, but the two I have spoken to were at FSU during his era and they have said his concepts were twenty years ahead of everyone else.

Most of TU's football history has been setting the trend on the offensive side, especially when it comes to the passing game. Dobbs, Rhome, Rader, Malzahn, and Morris. All really innovative stuff.

We had Lincoln Riley if we wanted him, he would have been another innovator. Course we took Montgomery instead. Course he would've probably left the next year for OU.

We also could have had Norvell. Could have probably got Huepel too.

I don't think any of their offenses are especially better than Monty's though... they just have had more talent than we have.

Too bad Riley wasn’t interested.

Didn't seem like Rader was 20 years in the future other than the fact that he had more than 2 receivers on the field at times. 20 years in the future of this game in 2011.... RG3 was winning the Heisman with Monty's offense. Now, if we saw some read option I might believe Rader was far ahead of his time.

Cmon Ash. Give Rader his due.

Plus running plays out of the wishbone hadn’t been done to that point by any Tulsa team.

You win with talent , something Rader had an abundance of in 1991.

Something you'll notice is... Rader, Monty, + every other coach likes to run the football way to much on first down. Rader didn't pass the ball once on first down during that entire comeback until he absolutely had to, down points in the shadow of his own endzone in the 4th quarter. As good as that game was, if TU doesn't get a couple of defensive breaks (a self inflicted fumble by A&M + an interception) we don't win the game.

That's my biggest gripe about Monty... he's stuck in the Rader era of Run Run Pass.

How and where and who blocked whom was very innovative at times. So were the passing routes.

I think you have that backwards. From what I know Riley wanted the job and approached TU about it. We just weren't interested in him.
That’s correct. I know that for a fact from the highest source. Heupel wasn’t interested and we didn’t have the money anyway.

We also could have had Norvell. Could have probably got Huepel too.

The reason why we don’t have talent at this point is Monty and his offense for crissakes

Especially Malzahn whose offense is designed to attract players who would otherwise not see the field in other programs and make them productive. It was a perfect fit while it lasted.

Here’s another question from the way back machine - when did they quit having Friday night high school football games at Skelly Stadium? As an alumnus of Will Rogers it was great to be able to walk a block north to the stadium for home games.

It was around 2000-2001, somewhere in there. I think with the money that TPS put into the different stadiums around Tulsa, TPS figured why should they pay a rental fee to TU when they can use the facilities they already have.

And I remember those because for 3 seasons (1995-1997) my friends and I did the PA announcing, spotting and ran the scoreboard/clock. We used to take bets on how long before Jenks would put in their 2nd string. We're talking the Jenks teams with Rocky Calmus and Bobby Klinck as the RBs 1 and 1A. I believe that was the game that Rogers had -3 yds at half time and the score was something like 56-0. Trimble called off the dogs early in that one. But virtually every game Rogers played was like that.

Another observation from the old Skelly of my youth (late 1960s to mid 1970s) - although there was a gate on the north side of the stadium, it was often not locked and we would go and play football on the field on Saturdays or Sundays when there was no TU game. AstroTurf was an interesting experience.

Yeah, it was pretty easy to get into the stadium back then. I remember going to the top of the old metal add on bleachers on the west side on July 4th and watching the plethora of fireworks displays in the area.

We used to play pick up soccer games at Skelly during the Roughnecks era...that turf was God-awful. Those aging Brits on the Roughnecks must have hated it.

I hated playing flag football on it, '92-'98 or so. You could start to see the screen mesh that the threads were woven into. Midfield was hard as a freaking rock. The number of times I strained a calf muscle because there was no give or take on that turf. I can't imagine playing soccer on it. Hell, my 13 y.o. son hates playing on the new style turf and he's a GK. I can't imagine what it would have been like to dive on that old turf.

Sneaking in after midnight with a blanket and drinking a bottle of wine on the 50 yard line with your girlfriend leads to things that will make you smile every time you watch TU highlights ... Too bad TG put in motion detectors.

Yeah...and there's a reason why TGs son suddenly left TU to go back to HS coaching
