Exactly. There’s a reason his name doesn’t come up as often as Smith, Rubley, Rhome, and Stripling.
I knew a different side of Gus as he was good friends with my roommate. Gus was pretty freaking hilarious and actually a pretty smart guy.My father started attending Tulsa football games in the mid-40s. He always said the Billy Guy Anderson was the best QB that he ever saw.
He didn’t care for Gus.
Good points here. I just made a point about Boomer being so young and his 1st meaningful game snaps in 2 years since HS came against an NFL 1st round pick and a pretty fast defense in Houston, a ranked USF, and an SEC fast team in Arkansas who probably has 1-2 future NFL DBs playing right now. Little bit faster game speed than Collinsville vs Skiatook/Oolagah whatever division in OK football they play. Skipper is just a RS sophomore. Gus Frerotte- 14 year NFL veteran didn't get a ton of meaningful game snaps where he played well until his junior year (did he RS?). It takes time and we're all expecting these guys to be Baker Mayfield out of the gate (BTW, every college coach who didn't recruit Mayfield should be fired...which would be every coach in the country. Kingsbury should be fired twice for at least not offering him a scholarship...then again Mahomes turned out to be a pretty special player in his own right).
Well, everyone likes to play the angle that he didn't have a scholarship offer out of HS because he walked-on at Tech.Mayfield had multiple D1A offers... none were schools big enough for his ego.
Mayfield was hampered by the fact he still stood 5 foot 2 and then 5 foot 6 in the football camps where QBs get early looks. He didn’t reach 6 feet until spring of his junior year. Which is too late for many major programs he had in mind.Mayfield had multiple D1A offers... none were schools big enough for his ego.
OMG...Mayfield would have killed the PAC-# under Leach.Mayfield was hampered by the fact he still stood 5 foot 2 and then 5 foot 6 in the football camps where QBs get early looks. He didn’t reach 6 feet until spring of his junior year. Which is too late for many major programs he had in mind.
Mike Leach offered but he wanted to play close to home. The other offers were FAU, Rice and New Mexico who was running the triple option at the time.
So yeah. He was cocky about it, but he didn’t have much choice but go to Tech. He also didn’t have much choice when you are the undisputed leader of a program and you are told you won’t get a scholarship but a special teams guy will be instead. He’s unbelievably lucky. He’s a unique talent, but often times stories like his are sidetracked despite the talent.
