Judy Mac Leod named CUSA Commish

I don't know if the laughter I am howling right now can be heard through the interwebs. THAT IS F***ING HYSTERICAL

You (and the AP) are a week late. We were talking about this in the Alley on Monday last week. One of the many benefits of a subscription ... insider info.

I have no idea who you are, but she has a really, really good rep among her former department colleagues at TU and many around the community. Why do you think she was so awful?

She was a puppet. Nothing that ever happened under her watch happened because she was out there pushing it, but because she had a boss in Dr. Lawless that was well respected throughout the academic and athletic circles. Schools don't elevate ticket managers to AD positions like Judy was. Had Dr. Lawless been here when Washington State came calling for Rick DIckson, I don't think Rick leaves here. Dr. Donaldson made it clear that he didn't think athletics should be part of an institution that was trying to build its reputation as an academic peer of SMU, Rice, etc. That made it easier for Rick to leave.

She was a nice enough person when I had to interact with her, but she did not hold the traditional role of a D-1 AD. She wasn't the marketer, she wasn't the fundraiser, she wasn't even the individual that made the hiring decisions.

TU set itself up for the success we've had and our current position in the American under her watch. I adore Dr Lawless but I have respect for Judy too.

Good for her.

Bingo! She is/was under appreciated. Under her (and others) the entire campus changed for the better and she was part of it. Good luck to her in her new job!

That's the point Rabid. Things that happened at TU athletically happened in spite of her. Much of the impetus behind the tennis center which subsequently led to the entire west side athletic complexes was led by Vince Westbrook who essentially went out and got Mike Case on board and other donors followed. About the only thing she did that is noteworthy is she hired Bill Self...but that was a no brainer. She "hired" Kragthorpe, but ultimately Jerry Ostroski is who really drove that. She also hired Ketih Burns and Buzz Peterson and John Phillips.

I always like her, she clearly is a sharp cookie, every university in that conference worked with her, they knew who they were hiring.

I hate to say it but Bla is actually correct here. She did do some good, but I really was not totally heartbroken when she left either. My 2 cents.

Using the "F" word while discussing an advanced degree holder from my university is unacceptable.

Becoming the first female commissioner of a major athletic conference is a significant accomplishment and should be positively recognized.

Interesting.. is it more of an accomplishment because she is a female? If Judy were a male alum of TU would it then be less of an accomplishment... Would it therefore be an even greater accomplishment if she underwent gender reassignment surgery and got the job as a man who was once a woman? Just trying to figure out when accomplishment became defined on gender basis..

My problem with Judy was never that she was a woman.. but rather that she was ill prepared and under qualified for the position she accepted. I am sure that she is much more qualified today to serve as a figurehead for a third tier conference than she ever was to run our athletic dept.

Goldie being named a commissioner would be an accomplishment for TU. It's not impressive for US because she is a woman, it's impressive because she is one of our own.

But anytime a non white male achieves a significant leadership position for the first time, it's an accomplishment for all. It's pretty badass that we have a connection to it. Tulsa has a nice history of diversity in athletics leadership and I'm extremely proud of that.

It is more of an accomplishment because she is a woman. Not because she is the first woman qualified to be a conference commissioner but because of all of the woman who have been passed over for similar positions simply because they were women.

It reminds me of something Chris Rock said about Obama. Obama being the first black president doesn't mean that black people have come a long way. That would imply that he was the first black person to ever be qualified. It means that white people have come a long way. Same can be said for gender equality. I am proud she is a Golden Hurricane and you can say what you want about her being a puppet but there is no doubt that the athletic program was in a better place when she left. She is one of the reasons we were attractive to Bubba who was a great athletic director.

Goldie being named a commissioner would be an accomplishment for TU..

Too bad the selection committees are species biased.. But I am pretty certain that Goldie will have to learn how to make change at the ticket office before she can be a commissioner.

TU_BLA did and he was the one you were defending. It's just not a good representation of our University. He's probably new here and just thought he was trying to be funny.
Not new...not by a long shot. My opinion is based on the fact that I knew Judy before she was athletic director when the ticket office was housed out of a trailer on the north side of Skelly. Yes, a lot of good things happened to TU athletically under her watch, but my point was there were others driving the bus to success and she was merely riding along.

I wasn't defending him. I was agreeing with some of his recollections.

Anyway, good for her. Bless her heart she's got a volitle situation to circumnavigate, good luck.
