Coaches are able to attend the 1st evaluation events this weekend, which runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The events are selected certified events with only 2 taking place, both in NYC.
Tulsa coaches are at the Under Armor event where they're watching a bunch of kids we've offered for 2017 and 2018 and/or are interested in. I've been following all the kids we're recruiting and have been able to find that many of those players are playing in the Under Armor event.
Most of the players I know we're looking at are playing for an OKC, KC and Houston team. At least 10 kids I know we're recruiting are playing in this event.
I know Coach Haith is at the Nike EYBL event which has most of the top HC's in attendance. The Nike circuit has the majority of the top 150 players. MoKan Elite is in this event which is the team Elijah Landrum plays on. They are so loaded with 5 star players like Trey Young and Jontay Porter that Landrum only got 7 minutes in their 1st game win. He did score 7 points.
However there are a bunch of really good players at the Under Armor event whose stock is rapidly rising and we are showing great interest in them, with some already offered like 18 Keyshawn Embrey and 17 Darien Jackson of KC and Savion Flagg of Texas.
Others we're shown great recent interest in and who had great 1st games are Cameron Mack Jr and Maxwell Evans of the Houston Defenders.
The KC team is loaded with Jackson and a 4-star we're interested in and a couple more. There are also players from other teams at both events we have shown interest in.
I'll try to give some updates on some of these players as I can find stats on them. I do know PG Cameron Mack had 12 assists in his 1st game, the most in the 1st games yesterday.
I know many are going to ask "why are we recruiting and even making some offers to players in 2017 when we only have 1 scholarship available?"
As we saw this year and in years past, you don't know how many scholarships will be available. I also know from recruiting myself that guys you might think are locks for you suddenly get swept off their feet by a bigger offer and you're left holding an empty bag.
You have to recruit at least 4-5 guys for each position, at least early in the recruiting season. That's 7 months before 2017 kids can sign and things will shake out as November approaches.
Concerning why coaches offer so many kids when they don't have available scholarships, if all wanted to commit. You have to make a verbal offer to kids to show your interest. A written offer is different. That's when things get serious.
We saw 2 examples last year in Jabar Ray and Darrell Brown Jr, both with verbal but not written offers. This is very common at all colleges. If you look at the recruiting lists of most schools, you'll see 20-30 or more kids being recruited and most services don't even know of all that are being recruited, namely Scout and 247 Recruiting. Rivals does the best job but they only get about 20% of who we're recruiting.
I apologize for the length of the post, but I wanted to give you all some recruiting info, plus my perspective on how recruiting works, mostly from behind the scenes.
I had the privilege to work for a great D1 coach in his latter years and learned so much from him and other coaches he put in contact with, to pick their brains so I'd know what to look for when evaluating and the important things to do when recruiting players.
