Elijah Joiner

Remember that we were upset we didn’t get the kid from East Central? What an amazing turn of events. Is he even playing anymore? Eli sure is. Goes to show it’s about much more than stars, AAU, and who is a “good recruiter.”

Eli was a very good player from Chicago. I was surprised we got him. Changing him to PG last year hurt his shooting and he must have thought or was told that PG's don't shoot. I have urged him to shoot the open shot all year as he has been turning them down. Tonight showed what making a couple can do for your confidence in that respect. As a new player steps up each game it makes it hard for the opponents to scout us...........

I was thinking about this tonight. How many of our guys have had 20+ point games this season? I’m pretty sure Joiner, Rachal, Horne, Igbanu, and Jackson all have. Nice to have options for who’s going to be “the man” on any given night.

Has Jones also?

Just showed it on SC both of the anchors gave Elijah props for the shot and his emotional embrace with Dad and in the press conference. Then talked about TU taking down UH, UM, UConn and Wichita in recent games.

Saw that on ESPN John Anderson (former Channel 6 sportscaster) was one of the 2 Sportscenter hosts tonight. Best national publicity TU has received in a while.

Joiner has had ups and downs in his TU career (as most players do). I couldn’t be happier for Elijah to have his greatest game (so far!) with his dad in attendance!

Just an awesome night for Elijah & his family!

The shot and Elijah’s emotional press conference is pretty much the lead story on all of the sports networks and their nightly college basketball recaps, SportsCenter, local sports. Big night for TU and the positive publicity. And it’s also being tweeted and retweeted coast to coast.

TU could have even paid for publicity like that. It's like a superbowl ad.

Beyond the benefit to the university, the human aspect of this whole story is truly the special part of it all. There’s a back story to Joiner’s emotional interview, I for one would like to know it. If this team keeps winning and is a part of the conversations of the talking heads we’ll get to hear it. Ultimately, I think the most impactful story will be that one.

Tremendous young man!

I brought two buddies with me, neither of whom had been to a TU game. During the pregame introductions, I told them, “That point guard is a guy you would want by your side in a knife fight. He is tough as nails.”

Both friends are already asking when the next game is they can attend.

Haith's hires of Wainright and Kwanza are looking good. Lots of factors go into team chemistry. The team has it.

Kwanza is going to really pay off over time as our post play continues to develop.

Wainwright has been an immediate impact in out of bounds plays/set plays and correcting some zone issues from last year. The game rotations have been much better this year as well, I think he deserves credit for getting Haith to listen to what I am sure the staff has previously discussed.

I've been to practices and Wainwright is the toughest defensive coach I have seen here since Self. He and Haith have made a good pair on revising last year's defense. We no longer lead the league in giving up "wide open threes".

Thought Joiner's undressing of Stevenson deserved a gif

That move got a big gasp from the crowd. The fact that he hit the shot...you sort of felt it was 100% Elijah's night.

Stevenson is all sorts of turned inside out right now. He has let his poor shooting affect his mentality towards the game and it shows on the defensive end. He looks like he is playing hard but you can also see that he is a little lost. The last 3 he took was reminiscent of a guy who didn't really want the ball in his hands. It was just awful. He wasn't close on a lot of his deep shots. Even the 1 FT he took just screamed he was desperate for anything outside of 2 ft to go down.

The way he gave up after the spin is what will make Marshall bench him
