and had his 5th losing season in his 6 seasons at Wake Forest maybe he should have stayed at Tulsa and made us a version of Gonzaga and a national power as he won and recruited well here in the cusa.

He'll go back to being a high level assistant somewhere soon. Maybe Kansas again. Kansas hasn't been bringing in the same type of talent as they used to.

They are ranked number 1 in the country. That’s in America. The United States. If there’s a team ranked higher than them, they must be pretty good. Because I’m pretty sure you can’t be ranked higher than 1. JMHO.

Their top recruit is Thompson at #20. They haven’t been doing well in the lottery-pick type guys, top 1-10. Possibly because of the NCAA case.

I think that was the advice given to him, but he chose to do it his way.

Manning was not happy at Tulsa, and more specifically, despised recruiting to Tulsa. He made that known to many other coaches while on the recruiting trail. Just didn't like dealing with the intricacies that come with recruiting to TU. It just wasn't as easy as he wanted it to be.

Or maybe he's just not that good at it. Maybe recruiting at KU is easy because it's KU not because of who the head coach is.

I think TU got a break when Manning left, just like they did when Steve Robinson and Buzz Peterson left.

All three coaches failed at their next jobs. TU made a great move when they hired Bill Self to replace Robinson and a horrible move when they promoted John Phillips to replace the Buzzster.

Frank Haith isn't Bill Self but I think the program is better with him than if Manning had stayed. I didn't realize that Manning was that unhappy here. Most of the guys on his C-USA championship team, aside from Shaq Harrison and Rashad Ray, were actually recruited and signed by Doug Wojcik.

I think Robinson would have done well here as long as he stayed here. He moved on too quickly. Same with Manning. Peterson was not the right choice at that time. Honestly should have taken the shot with Gillespie. And there was always Mike Anderson who we never pursued for whatever reason.

We absolutely pursued Anderson, especially after Self left. Hell, we may have pursued him last summer, depending on whom you believe. There are stories about Anderson’s interview that came years before you were on this board.

Phillips was hired because the players were going to revolt otherwise. Greg Harrington was on the steps of the Reynolds Center saying on a tv interview that he would bail if they didn’t hire JP.

As discussed many times, after Self left, the staff agreed it was Norm’s job and Gillespie didn’t go after it. We hired Buzz on Coach K’s rec. He was a search firm candidate. It was a disaster. He and his wife hated the city from the moment they got here.

Haith seems to like Tulsa. He doesn’t complain.

My understanding is Judy was overwhelmed by the prospect of MJ just dropping into an occasional practice or game to visit his college roommate. You say Buzz and his wife hated Tulsa the second they stepped foot here...well, the players seemed to hate Buzz equally as much.

He never should have taken the job. He should have had a heart to heart with Self on these intricacies before he signed on the dotted line. He wasted our time, and now he's about through wasting Wake Forest's time. I'm sure he's got an excuse for both places, but he just didn't have the personality or put out the effort at both places. You can't just rest on Kansas's laurels.

There are not that many long term coaching success stories out there. What are there, 20 to 30 out of over 353 schools fielding teams this year?

Nova is one of the only ones I can think of. Jay Wright wasn't exactly stellar early in his tenure, but he certainly flipped a switch with that program.

Gregg Marshall, Greg McDermott. And what are we calling long term? > 10 years? Coach at St. Mary's. Coach at BYU.

He always acted as if he was bored stiff the few times he came to watch Shake play. You could definitely tell that he didn’t want to be there.
