Corruption = big money in politics

The fact that Obama had to lie on national television to get his healthcare bill passed tells me that public opinion still matters at least occasionally.

Godwin's Law (or Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is an Internet adage in two forms...

1) the longer an internet thread continues, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1"—
2) If you mention Adolf Hitler or Nazis within a discussion thread, you’ve automatically ended whatever discussion you were taking part in.

The Crossfire Variant ...the longer a discussion of politics goes on, the probability of a claiming that Obama is a liar approaches 1

Proposed Crossfire Law.. If you change the subject of a thread to make gratuitous shots of questionable validity, you have ended the discussion. (I think I'll start observing and imposing this on myself. I'm sure we can count on several members here to highlight every perceived violation on my part.)

Obamacare wasn't even liked by the Democrats in congress. He had to twist the arms of number of Democrat senators to get them to eventually vote for it. Also he had to promise aloe to labor unions just to get their buy in

Why would some Democrats oppose it? Big Pharma and Insurance Companies spent over $600M to make sure that single payer was killed, that private Medicare Advantage Plans would get an extra 15% over what Medicare gets to administer their plans, and Medicare could not begin to bargain over prescription prices, etc. etc. They also put $100M via the Chamber of Commerce to oppose the any price and competition limitations that the plan imposed. The auto companies also supported it, as they wanted an alternative to insurance benefits they had negotiated in union contracts. This was big money at it's finest. You want to extend coverage? Fine, pay us even more!

Acid test, what sector of the stock market has been the most robust since it's passage? Healthcare sector. Test # two, who the 3 biggest recipients of Health Care dough? There members of the Senate Finance Committee (1 Dem and 2 Reps) who were charged with negotiating the plan.

As they say, "follow the money."

1). I wasn't the one who brought up Obamacare but was commenting on the prior post.

2). I take offense with your referencing my statement as one of "questionable validity". He absolutely promised we could keep our current healthcare plans and doctors. As I know all too well, this statement was a lie due to the language contained in the Act.

Approve of the rule suggestion. So once a topic of a thread is changed do we let it die and not comment? Still waiting on the Nazi and Hitler post.

I'm not interesting in pointing fingers so much as opting out of conversations that don't go anywhere.

My view is there is big money that drives politics, and that even principled players, such as Obama, have gotten sucked into politics driven by money.

We can disagree with policies, but our politics and our discussion of politics have reached such a polarized low, that we just yell at each other without any attempt to listen to each other.

It's sad, and it is all too likely a sign of our demise as the world's leader.

Oh, and BTW China eclipsed the US as the world's largest economy in 2014.

Speaking of the China reference, I view our trade agreements which are almost exclusively designed to benefit U.S. large corporations at the expense of workers here one of the clearest examples of money driving our policies. U.S. based companies should never be able to manufacture a good in China then ship it to the U.S. at a lower net cost then having that same product produced by workers here at home.

Where is the outrage at US companies, many of whom were either bailed out by American taxpayer dollars or received substantial subsidies and tax breaks, who then turn around and move manufacturing operations across our border. Is the argument that they are merely taking advantage of trade deals made by our politicians?

Ironic that the same governement whose trade pacts resulted in the disappearance of living wage jobs are now suggesting that they are the answer to creating the same.

From WATU:

Yes, WATU's Crossfire Law is that anything he doesn't like is off topic.

However, it's okay to say that the people's wishes are thwarted by big money, except when the people's opinion is ignored concerning something he favors. Even after Obamacare has been around awhile now, the latest Gallop poll shows that the majority of Americans are still against it. So sometimes it's okay to go against the will of the American people. Nancy said the law should be passed so we could find out what's in it. We did. Nancy told the truth, Obama however said somethings that weren't true.
