Most Bracketologists are giving Tulsa the 3-14 and 6-11 games. That may be better than the 1-16 8-9 games we usually get. I suspect the BOK wants Kansas though their enthusiasm may be down, especially since they have been here twice. Kansas State or Iowa State would be huge draws as well as Oklahoma ( though I doubt they would give OU that advantage).

Houston might draw better than usual. Texas Tech would probably be a fairly good draw. Any of the Big 10 teams usually draw well. Please no west coast teams to the BOK. They hurt attendance.

Would love to get Wofford or Belmont here. They would bring nice crowds and enthusiasm.

Tech and K State would probably be the best bet for attendance. Both fan bases are excited and will travel. An AAC team would be nice for local interest.

Agree Tech and K State for attendance. UH so I can root against that team. A big bonus would be Murray State and its star player.

I hope the rest of the City doesn't take that attitude. Hosting NCAA tourneys is a feather in the cap for the City of Tulsa. Support from the community is vital to keep events like this coming back.

Sorry.. not driving 4 hours round trip to see teams i dont care about... read: any team other than Tulsa..

The crappie are starting to bite and the lake is 10 minutes away...

I wouldn't drive for hours either. My comment was directed toward sports fans living in Tulsa

The Gathering Place and the expanding Brady venues should result in future tournaments. However, BOK needs to average 14K plus.

Big12 Wrestling Tourney is this weekend at the BOK. They're doing a nice job attracting sporting events.

I will be out of town for most of it but hope for 14k.

Kansas State could bring a bunch. I guess they could have Kansas too. That would be interesting in different brackets. Easy drive from the north.

Tulsa as a 14 coming to Tulsa would be amazing. I'm speaking it into existence right now. Tulsa beats Memphis tomorrow by 20, then makes a conference tourney run, and gets in as a 14.

Nice dreaming..TU actually cannot play at the BOK as any seed in the NCAA tournament. Somehow OU and OSU can play in OKC, but we cannot play in Tulsa. Kansas can play in KC, Illinois in Chicago, Duke in Raleigh or Greensboro. It's just silly.

We could possibly . if TU wouldn’t agree to be the host school... it seems we “host” games often in OKC just so OU and OSU can be in OKC...

The problem is we are the host organization. We would need ORU or the Summit League to take the reigns and be the host in Tulsa. Or even the Big XII could sign on as the host...heck, I even think the AAC could be the host and we could then play there. But if we are the host, you're not technically allowed to play in the venue.

Do they pay us?

I don’t know how that works. I think TU usually works with the Tulsa Sports Commission to put the bids together and then the Chamber gets in on promoting it. In the end the TSC will say there was something like a $20M benefit to Tulsa in terms of hotel rooms, food, etc. I don’t know how the ticket revenue is divvied up but my guess is that is small pittance compared to the sponsorship dollars that come in.

Lol how many posters were around when some people thought the BOK would be an utter disaster in Tulsa.

Turns out it was a great idea long over due. Good Luck to the teams coming to Tulsa I’ve had my tickets for quite sometime and looking forward to some great games and meeting folks from around the country.

My only regret is Tulsa is not a year in and year out contender for a tournament spot like in the not so distant past.

Go TU

I believe an arena was on the ballot for the city at least 2x before LaFortune finally convinced the county to go in on it and also tie some other very well thought out projects to it. I never realized how much the average Tulsa’s absolutely hated downtown the first 10-12 years I lived here. And I can’t blame them. It was absolutely dead.

And I know a lot of people hated the way OneOK got done with that area assessment fee (or whatever it was called) and the businesses it affected cried about it incessantly but those that stuck it out are loving it right now. That was one of the better city government actions. I do remember a lot of people saying they would never go to another Drillers game because it moved away from the Fairgrounds. Both of those projects and some really smart planning by the McNellie’s group have turned downtown into a very cool place...just wish I had the energy to hang out in that scene more o_O

I love the BOK and the downtown ballpark both. When I lived in Tulsa I only went downtown for TU basketball. It would be different if I lived there now.

You’re correct Nevada both are great for our community. Probably already paid for the Mensa’s on our board will know for sure.

Go TU!!!

My favorite picks would be Wofford, Murray State, and St Mary's.

I am doubting OU would be part of it now. They lost to WVa last night who is absolutely dreadful this year (what happened to Huggi-bear's recruiting?) Worst part for OU was a kid hitting a shot with his big toe on the 3pt line and it would have been a tying 3. Correctly ruled a 2 on replay review. Have to know where you are, especially in those situations...always leave yourself some wiggle room.

Every site wants Murray State. Kansas and K State would probably bring the biggest crowds.

we REALLY need KU or K State to meet attendance goals. I have no confidence that Tech or I State would bring similar crowds. TCU (if they get in) would be a good second. My only interest in UH is root against them. I'm not convinced they have fans that care enough to travel.

KState travels extremely well. I remember a football game at Baylor in '98 (when Baylor was AWFUL) and KState brought like 10000 fans to a game that was pretty much settled before the coin flip. With their run last year and some pretty hyped anticipation for this year (provided Wade is healthy), they could bring a good number of fans.

Iowa State brings huge crowds as well. I bet Tech would this year.

Well we got Iowa State which is a HOME RUN for the BOK center, as well as Houston and Texas Tech, both capable of driveable big crowds. A big 10 like Ohio State can bring a lot of folks and Buffalo is on fire for its basketball team. The only team I would have liked was Murray State but that was too much to ask. KU and KSU were closer but I'm not sure would bring more than Iowa State and the others. Congratulations Sponsoring Team University of Tulsa, BOK Center and the City of Tulsa........you hit a home run..........

Iowa State wants 4000 tickets....Each school gets 450. There will be 3500 or more ISU fans buying from scalpers. Same with Houston and Texas Tech.

From a release I just got...

The NCAA allocates only 450 tickets to each participating institution for the preliminary rounds of the tournament. Iowa State’s NCAA ticket allotment for the preliminary rounds will be allocated as follows:

  • Cyclone Club Members (261 tickets)
  • Iowa State Students (55 tickets)
  • Participating Student-Athlete’s Family/Guests (64 tickets)
  • Coaches’ Family and Administrative Travel Party (70 tickets)
Because of the extremely limited availability, only Cyclone Club members who are also men’s season ticketholders at the Directors level ($12,500) will be eligible for tickets (maximum four tickets). Please remember that requesting tickets does not guarantee fulfillment. Also, please note that these club levels and limits are subject to change based upon tournament site.

Texas Tech vs N Kentucky 12:30 Fri
Buffalo vs Az St/St Johns 3:00 Fri

Houston vs GA St. 6:20 Fri
Iowa St vs Ohio St 8:50 Fri

By rule we can never play at a site we host.

I love the BOK and the downtown ballpark both. When I lived in Tulsa I only went downtown for TU basketball. It would be different if I lived there now.

My wife and I spent Saturday on Cherry Street, in the Arts District, then went over to the Pearl District.

The Arts District has an Irish festival at the Guthrie Green and the whole area seemed like another town. Cars driving everywhere, almost all the parking was taken, people everywhere, everything as bustling. It was awesome!

Hell, I didn’t realize there were 3 breweries at 6th and Utica with another building being redone for a 4th along with the brewery, bars, and restaurants down the street closer to Peoria.

The East End needs a little more and the Blue Dome is a little spread out still but there is so much to do there now it’s crazy! Even had a line in Glacier when we went to get some deserts.

He eventually admitted he was wrong. There were several well respected posters who hated the idea. “No one will ever go downtown!” Those arguments were kind of how I got to know some people on the board. I think CB figured out I was in law school and that explained the bite to my arguments or something.

That was two years before “Fresno sucks at life,” which was one of my better accomplishments on here. Up to that point I didn’t get along with Typical but he left me some after that.

Back to the point, that arena has done really well. What gives me hope is we have venues that don’t need constant support from everyone in town. People travel here for shows. If anyone had made that argument in 2003, they’d have been laughed off of here (or the old tulsasportsweb board). And if someone had suggested an NBA team in OKC would do well . . .

(or the old tulsasportsweb board).

There’s a site that hasn’t been referenced in awhile.

Several of us made the quick jump to Rivals after AZ shut his site down and the sportsweb mods proved to dislike any opinions other than their own.

I’m glad everyone else eventually caught up.

Sounds like 6th street has been gentrified since I lived there in ‘73. Jobs were hard to come by then so I was working swing shift at Git-N-Go and on my way home one evening I stopped for some gas and a hooker approached me at the pump and offered a “service” for a ride home. Newly married I declined.
