IMO, in today's world of NIL, you can't build a winning program going from 25 losses to go 15 losses and then bouncing back 15-20 losses. When it came to football, AD Moore made the bold move of triaging the damage quickly, after 2 years. I believe the same must be done for basketball. Hiring Konkol was always a risk, he was mediocre at LA Tech, their version of Wojcik (minus the demeanor) and to my knowledge was never considered a strong up and coming head coach.
Football may generate the revenue, but basketball is very important at TU. We are witnessing the worst 3-year run of TU basketball since the Jim King era of 1977-78 through 1979-80 (9-18, 14-13, 8-19). IMO it's time to move on from Konkol and find the equivalent Tre Lamb who is a proven program builder from schools with less resources than TU. Because of NIL, this cycle will only continue as TU losses their best players (i.e. - Haggerty) annually, thus never able to turn the corner. I find it hard to believe NIL is the only thing that matters to kids, I would like to think competing for Championships matters as well.
It will be interesting to see how our rivals at Wichita State react to consecutive losing season under Paul Mills, and a 2nd season that was worst than his 1st. Over the past 15 years Wichita State has clearly surpassed TU in terms of elevating the basketball programs. The past 5 years both programs are trending in the wrong direction. Over the past 45 years these 2-programs have mirrored each other in terms of success, alternating periods of success with few great seasons, some good seasons, many average seasons, a couple really bad seasons, a couple great hires, a couple good hires, a couple mediocre hires, and a couple bad hires.
