- The American Athletic Conference’s across-the-board success in nonconference games continued in Week 4 of the college football season as a 7-4 week pushed the league’s cumulative nonconference record to 28-12 in 2016.
- Every team in The American has at least a .500 record in 2016 — a claim that only The American and the SEC can make.
- A pair of overtime victories highlighted the Week 4 schedule as Tulsa won a wild 48-41 double-overtime thriller at Fresno State, and Tulane won what ended up as the longest game in American Athletic Conference history with a 41-38 victory against Louisiana in four overtimes.
- Tulsa improved to 3-1 on the year as the Golden Hurricane rallied from a 31-0 deficit to stun Fresno State. QB Dane Evans threw for 273 yards and four touchdowns, but it was his 18-yard touchdown run in the second overtime that carried Tulsa to the come-from-behind win.
- Tulane evened its record at 2-2 with a tough, four-OT win against the Ragin’ Cajuns. K Andrew DiRocco drilled a clutch 48-yard field goal in the third overtime to keep the Green Wave alive, and QB Glen Cuiellette and WR Terren Encalade connected for their third touchdown of the day in the fourth overtime to give the Tulane the lead. Cuiellette finished with four touchdown passes, while Encalade had a career day with three TDs and 103 receiving yards on sevven catches.
- Houston and Memphis remained unbeaten with eye-popping performances on both offense and defense. The Cougars are 4-0 after a 64-3 win at Texas State in which they held the Bobcats to 33 rushing yards. QB Greg Ward Jr. threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing TD for Houston.
- Memphis, meanwhile, used a 35-point first quarter to roll to a 77-3 win against Bowling Green at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. The 77 points are the most by an American Athletic Conference team in league history as QB Riley Ferguson threw six touchdown passes and rushed for a score — all in the first half.
- Temple, UCF and Cincinnati also scored nonconference wins. The Owls opened Saturday with a 48-20 victory against Charlotte in Philadelphia as QB Phillip Walker therw for 268 yards and two touchdowns. UCF scored six rushing touchdowns, including three from RB Dontravious Wilson, as the Knights overwhelmed Florida International 53-14 in Miami. The Bearcats, meanwhile, won the annual battle for the Victory Bell for the 11th straight year with a 27-20 decision against Miami (Ohio) at Nippert Stadium. QB Ross Trail threw for 276 yards in his first career start and RB Tion Green scored the game-winning touchdown with 5:09 left in the fourth quarter.
- USF dropped its first game of the season as the Bulls fell 55-35 to No. 13/14 Florida State. UConn fell 31-24 to Syracuse, and East Carolina lost at Virginia Tech, 54-17. SMU started the week with a 33-3 setback to No. 21 TCU in the annual matchup for the Iron Skillet.
