Story on 2019 guard Calvin Temple, who was recently offered by Tulsa...from Today's U...
He still has three seasons of high school basketball left ahead of him, but Olive Branch (Miss.) High School guard Calvin Temple already has one opportunity to go to college for free at The University of Tulsa.
“I feel great about my offer,” Temple told Today’s U. “I didn’t really believe it when it happened. I was like, ‘For real?’ I didn’t really believe it at first, then it hit me.”
The Golden Hurricane offered the sophomore-to-be on June 19th and several other programs of various caliber are interested and might not be far behind.
“I’ve got Murray State, Northern Arizona, Wofford, Stephen F. Austin, Ole Miss and Mississippi State looking at me,” Temple said. “Stephen F. Austin said they will be calling me and my parents and my trainer in July during the live period.”
Temple, who plans to camp at Wofford on Aug. 20, said he believes Stephen F. Austin will be the next school to extend an offer.
As a freshman, he averaged approximately 15 points, four assists and three steals per game for his high school team. Below, he can be seen draining deep 3-pointers and making some impressive no-look passes.
“Somebody said I play like Tony Parker and some people say I play like Steph (Curry) or Mike Bibby and things like that,” Temple said. “Coaches like that I can shoot, I can pass and dribble. When I play older opponents, I can hold my own against other great guards that they see.”
There’s still plenty of time for more offers to roll in for the guard and there are several schools he hopes to hear from.
“I want to hear from like UCLA, California, North Carolina, Florida, UNLV and places like that,” he said.
“I’ve got to keep Tulsa in mind. I always said the first person to offer me, I would always keep in my top five, at least until I wrap everything up. I’ve got to go at least visit.”
While offers from those schools would put them well in the hunt, there is one Pac-12 school he really has his sights set on.
“The school I really want to go to is Arizona,” Temple told Today’s U. “I want to go out west, far from home. That’s what I want to do. I just like it out there. It just feels better. I’m from Memphis and there’s a lot of killing and a lot of bad things going on, but in Arizona I don’t have to worry about nothing like that. It just feels better.
“If everything goes like it’s supposed to, I want to wrap everything up my junior year.”
Different highlight clips and recruiting profiles list Temple anywhere from 6-foot to 6-foot-2, but it’s likely he’ll be even bigger by the time he gets to college in three years.
“I need to get bigger and faster,” he said. “That’s what they say. I always got to work my game, but right now just shooting and dribbling is what I’ll work on a lot.
