Tulsa World article on potential hires

Which ones do you consider train wrecks other than Rod. I actually think Rod would be better hire than several others listed

No subscription so I can’t read it, care to mention these names.

Turner, Crutchfield and Rod are the only ones on that list that excite me.

If English isn’t on the list it’s not worth it. Probably won’t happen, but should be a top candidate.

So we are supposed to hire an NDSU assistant, a guy who isn’t a coach, a former player who is jobless, or a high school coach?

He didn’t exactly wow in his first season leading a team. .500 at George Mason doesn’t really scream excitement, at least to me.

More commenting on the faulty list…you’re right that it’s not fire in a bottle, but why not include him or Murray St coach or (fill in the blank head coach from smaller d1 program)…just a poorly complied list

Brian Montonati, Sean Sutton, Scott Sutton, Pooh, Paul Mills, Chris Crutchfield, Kyan Brown, Kyle Keller, Rod Thompson, KT Turner, Rex Walters
Whoever is a great recruiter should get the most consideration. It’s all about talent and the biggest deficit for Tulsa has been consistent outside shooters who can average at least 15 pts . Martins Obanu and Brandon Rachael were great players for Frank but the supporting cast was limited.

Might as well throw JR Rollo in there. He coached AAU ball. The only ones close were some of the good assistants. I think the other OU assistant is a better fit and has been a successful D-1 coach. Not much thought in the list. At least Bob Hoffman is not on it.

Just stupid lazy fake journalism by a newspaper that thinks the program is such crap we don’t have a beat writer and not one game other than the loss to ORU got front page coverage
Recent example after the W over Wichita the thumbnail back page article said our next game was against Houston not SMU

I like Rod Thompson, but if we want him for head coach today, why didn’t we want him 3 years ago when he was rumored to be hired as an assistant coach?

If I remember correctly, TU got uptight about an early leak, and Rod got fed up with TU being so anal. So he took himself out of the situation.

That is the most out of touch with reality writing that has been published by the Whirled for years. A veritable word salad of names that will not be considered or random alumni listed because they Googled TU basketball alumni coaching. This is the level to which the local rag has sunken. Dave Sittler is laughing.

Zero research on his list, writer is not in touch with current decision makers at university.

Was not TU’s issue!! Frank did everything to hire Rod. But family for Thompson was more important.

I'm not advocating for Montonati. BUT, the article wasn't wrong when they said he had that "it" factor about him. But just like Gottlieb wanting to jump straight into being a HC at a D1 program, these guys really need to cut their teeth coaching at the college level first. Understand that day to day grind, the recruiting, the greasing of the wheels with current players who are unhappy about playing time. I think if a Sutton is the choice here then maybe you see Montonati as a 3rd assistant.

He does have a brilliant basketball mind. Owasso was so so this year but in HS you don't get to go out and pick the players you want. You choose from the players who present themselves to you.

I like the Drake coach as an option too. But I'm still all in on Henderson from SDSU.

The article and column illustrate the irrelevance of the Whirled. It's just a filler piece.

Haistens list is mostly crap. Ctt8410 has a much better list. Haisten is right in one thing; the new coach needs to own the Tulsa high school basketball community and not hide from it.

Crutchfield has a decent recruiting resume I think? I have never heard of Turner until now. Does he have TU ties?
Turner and Patrick are both assistants at OU and might get a look. I am not one to believe in TU ties a lot. Our best coaches had no ties to TU, other than Self lived near ORU. Charisma is what wins people over in today’s basketball world. Think of the opposite of our last AD.

I also am not big on TU ties.

An a 1000% hell naw on Kyan Brown. Scoop likes him because he's goofy and affable. But he's also dumb as a rock. I've had many conversations with Kyan in the past and he was only allowed to make sure players got to class and he'd help them take care of their logistical business like making sure they signed up for a room.
