Been busy, game on ESPN plus and the Jet as always. I will catch up on Houston game and give a warning if its needed for a close game. I started mid quarter. Bittle got the start, no 3pt shots in the first 8 and no Wyvette yet. Hrafnkelsdottir hasn't played in a while radio guy said she was unavailable but missed why in Houston game.

Tulsa with a solid start, Tulane fights back. Tight game vit of an arm wrestle, we are rebounding so much better than we did before with Evans getting more time.

Tulane 10

Tulsa's offense goes through the paint and looks so much smoother. It's mostly high post stuff through Lewis and Evans. Both are good passers and can hit the shot there so it has taken pressure off the perimeter and really helped. Lascay has been on a tear and really playing we that continues this game. I like what I have seen from them. It's been a solid adjustment by Mossman to get us more offense.

2q 10:00
Tulsa 14
Tulane 16

Tulane hit a 3 to beat the buzzer and retake the lead.

Tulsa making Tulane work, tulane getting solid shots and making them Tulsa has missed a couple shots so game remains back and forth. Tulane started with the ball and hit the first basket. Now it's been a 4-6pt lead as they go at it. Lascay is the only Hurricane shooting well. Tulane hits a couple threes, tulsa goes low post and Moutry gets an and one but misses the freebie. Tulsa has really struggled from the line dropping percentages and rankings from near 70% as a team to 65% the last two or three games. With the bad field goal shooting its causing low point out puts despite good offense.

2Q 4:18
Tulsa 20
Tulane 32

Tulane is making baskets now, Tulda still struggling. I am watching with no sound still no Wyvette, she may be out which makes it tougher as she has been a solid scoring option.

Mossman puts Mia at point and brings in Clayton another freshman who has been giving us some good spot minutes comes in. Like Evan's she seems to be getting more comfortable. True low post player. We try and go to her and get a good kick for a three, she draws a foul. Has been a solid defender and rebounder when in. Another positive spot as we go along. Her and Hrafnkelsdottir giving us 8 and 8 from a true low post spot would do wonders for everyone. Tulsa closes lead some as we near half. Lascay has a lapse after good defense on an inbound Tulsa gets a rebound. Good shot on offense, clayton gets hand on rebound can't control out of bounds, Tulsa snags a steal Lascay takes lot of contact no call as buzzer goes off.

Halftime

Tulsa has to make shots field goals and free throws. That's the biggest issue right now.

No Wyvette today. Tulsa still struggling with shooting. They are keeping Tulane under 40% but can't make their own shots. Tulane has started to heat up on threes against Tulsa's zone. Back to back threes open the game up. Not sure if its injuries or illness but Tulsa appears to be short handed these last two/three games. Unfortunately they don't have the team to do super well with that. Some younger players development haven't been able to make as much impact as they are covering extra minutes.

3Q 5:26
Tulsa 29
Tulane 42

Tulsa can't make a shot, including an open lay up our player slipped on. Defense strong, several possesions just pitting in stops. Finally both teams exchange baskets. Since Tulane has made those back to back threes to open the lead up they have fallen a bit in love with them there have been a couple taken with hands in face. Tulsa missing lay ups and bunnies can't close the lead despite good defense.

3Q 1:16
Tulsa 31
Tulane 47

Tulsa is so small. I like the zone we are playing. High ball pressure, everyone else sag, double the drives/post, shoot the passing lanes. They have mixed in some man to man on occasion to good effect. The offense has been the issue. Not sure why we have suddenly become such terrible shooters but it's hard to watch, even I don't think the shot is going in, I am sure the girls are as frustrated playing. 13-48 27% overall and 2-12 from 3 16.7%. We haven't fallen in love with the outside shot at least

4Q 10:00
Tulsa 31
Tulane 47

Bittle has two tough but makeable lay ups she misses, Tulane tossing stuff up and it is going in. Tulsa has been outscored 18-12 on average in the fourth quarter. Shooting woes continue. Tulane making shots and free throws.

4Q 6:07
Tulsa 33
Tulane 55

Tulsa has only two fewer field goals attempts than Tulane, despite being out rebounded 49-31. There is a lot of good going on here that is being totally obliterated by some just terrible shooting. It's not like the shooting forms look terrible, or that the wrong people are shooting, or even that they are taking bad shots. They just can't make them.

4Q 3:48
Tulsa 36
Tulane 58

Clayton again looks solid in her time which continues to grow. She is not afraid of physicality. Still needs to grow some on defense where she is solid in the one on one versus a post but struggles on help and occasionally in zone. She also needs to be more consistent with moving her feet as she gets a little complacent.

Tulsa and Tulane are both getting players some minutes, Tulsa remains scrappy, but is still struggling to make even lay ups.

4Q 1:30
Tulsa 41
Tulane 64

Oh my goodness Clayton breaks out her offense with about 55 or 56 seconds left in the game, nice little move, great footwork, used the backboard and finished strong that the second good little move I have seen from her. Tulsa definitely fought the whole way, got to figure out how to get the ball in the basket. The short shots, lay ups missed were enough to have kept them in contention at that six to ten point margin that they fought around for a good portion of that game.

Tough being shorthanded. Tulane gets a nice win. Houston also had a really good win against Temple both should be looking at cracking projections with another win or two. Florida schools are still out with covid but four bids from the AAC women seem like a real possibility. This is the best league I think we have been in. Was the MVC good when we were there? I know Missouri St has always been pretty good and I think Creighton had some solid teams.

Final
Tulsa 47
Tulane 64

Better fourth than we have had only lost 16 to 17 may have been the fresh legs as well as the Tulane changes last 3+ minutes.

I do enjoy reading your women’s game recaps. I went to a lot of games when my oldest daughter was playing high school ball and knew several Tulsa players but haven’t been in a few years.

I usually try to attend at least one game in every sport every season. Women's basketball I get to more than a few though not as many as the men. Usually get a few of men's and women's soccer and some softball in. We have some very good Olympic sports and some very dedicated student athletes.

Houston Game Recap:

I listened and watched but wasn't able to stay focused the whole time.

We are short people either through illness or injury. Hrafnkelsdottir and a couple others have been unavailable. Tulsa is incredibly thin and this hurts. Especially with the fourth quarter troubles.

This game continued some ice cold shooting. Houston is a pretty good team and look like they are on course to get a bid this year.

Tulsa's offense looked good but we couldn't make shots. We ended up doing better versus Tulane on free throws but this was the third game in a row where we even struggled there. Tulsa went from roughly 70% to 66% as a team from the line over that three game span.

Defense looked strong and while we are still outsized and getting out rebounded it's much more of a fight and the girls have been getting better at getting those important timely rebounds.

This is the second game Lascay has just taken over. After deferring to the Mayberrys she has really taken charge and has become a great two way player. Lascay is one of the few who has shot well ove this stretch, her and Lewis leadership have been very good.

Despite going in to the fourth competitive with terrible shooting Houston came out and put Tulsa away.

Just being honest this team is a little too thin and small. If they shoot well they will win a lot of games (OSU is a strong NCAA team for example) otherwise they are going to struggle because of height. Hrafnkelsdottir coming back would help. Clayton our big freshman we got with Evans and Wyvette, has started to get more playing time and looks pretty solid. Hopefully her role continues to grow and we can get everyone back going into the tourney for a run and preview for next season.

Do you ever attend volleyball? We went to a ton of those back in the day. That was until the girl found out that 6’ 1” was a little too short for the middle blocker position on her team.

It's time for Matilda to go as well. I'm sure the players love her but she is not getting the job done. We're not even really competitive (and haven't been) in the AAC.
