Time to shut down any pretence that a Republican Party exists. It's become MAGA. With at least 4 MAGA MDs voting to put R.F.K. jr as head of the HHS, the last vestige of principle that evaporated with the confirmation of Tulsi has been reconfirmed. Gone, swept into the dustbin along with the acronym "RINO". RIP.

Why wouldn’t it be? Trump won 312 electoral votes and beat Harris by 1.5 points nationally. When was the last time a Pub received 49.8% of the national vote?

Vote percentages don’t mean very much…. It’s the people and ideals behind them that are worth focusing on.

Hitler only received <44% when he took power. The country he took over didn’t have another multi party election for ~60 years because people ignored what was going on day after day until it was too late. Wake up!

Sounds a lot like an unconstitutional vaccine mandate (a vaccine which didn’t prevent the virus btw) based on the grounds of saving the country. Or maybe violating Americans free speech…again on the grounds of saving the country. I can go on if you like.

Not surprised a NYTs journalist is upset btw. A paper who in fact supported both those items I shared above

All that said….Trump shouldn’t be saying that crap

You somehow feel you have to criticize Biden's administration when Trump is criticized. The same two repetitive drumbeats in a row against Biden's administration doesn't counteract the multiple problems Trump's actions make. Seems like it's your go to because you don't really have a response to what Trump has done or said. You rarely criticize Trump, which is odd since he does so many things to criticize. Makes it seem like you don't think Trump deserves any criticism.

If Biden ever made a statement like that you wouldn't let it go, but Trump does it and no words out of you, aside from criticism of Biden's administration. I'll say it again, seems like the other guy says tit, and you feel you have to say tat. And saying you are playing games with Aston gets old. He is acting like a dictator. There's no other way to see it. Hopefully the courts stop these actions, but I'm afraid the damage will already be done when the courts get around to intervening. They need to be putting stays on these actions while they are deciding, but don't seem to be doing so.

My statements are rooted in the hypocrisy I find prevalent on this board. The fact I talked non stop about inflation when it’s was 8% largely to crickets and now we have a change in the White House and it’s a problem. It drives me nuts. The fact we had silence while Biden attacked our civil liberties but now it’s a crisis is problematic to me as well.

I raise these things to avoid the echo chamber this board would become it there wasn’t a voice of dissent. Political message board become very boring when everyone is participating in a group t think. Is that what we desire in this board ?

Biden or the Democratic administration didn’t make broad assertions that anything they did in furtherance of what they believed to be helpful for the country should be allowed. They said that in times of severe danger to the American people, that certain exceptions should be made…. (Exceptions which were targeted at combatting the illness and though temporary impositions to liberty were not permanent erosions of it) And ultimately the courts disagreed and they accepted, begrudgingly, that opinion.

I’m not surprised that your are unable to distinguish the nuanced difference in the situation.

Nuance is important. Without nuance, one might argue that Trump with this statement is supporting Luigi going free and Americans gunning down more billionaires in the streets because they believe they are “Saving” America. It could be used by people like Oswald to defend their actions.

People were not commenting on the budget for multiple reasons. These are my reasons. One, I didn't think Biden would do anything about it, especially while coming out of the covid crisis. Two, I didn't think any democrat would do anything significant on it. Three, Biden didn't have any person unequipped to making cuts doing so. Musk will cause way more serious problems than the innocuous ones he resolves. Four, Trump has shown nothing in his last term, or during this term to show he really cares about cutting, or slowing down our deficit.

The reason everybody is talking about it now is that Trump/Musk are making ineffectual cuts to the budget and spending, that cause irrevocable harm. These cuts are illegal, unconstitutional, and breaking the system of checks and balances. Using the same tired response you use when Trump is criticized doesn't change that. Going to the same two arguments just shows you, (the general you) don't really want to discuss what Trump has done recently. Argue for or against, without an interjection of what Biden did. Same can be said for Biden, make an argument without an interjection about what Trump did.

Yes there are certain instances that their actions should be compared, but not every argument should be a comparison. That is a transactional argument, which is exactly what Trump would argue. There are morals, and what is right & wrong, and precedents that need focus aside from a transactional comparison.

A more basic issue is gerrymandering which has moved Congressional races to the primaries between candidates of the same party from the general elections between candidates of different parties. Ideological correctness has replaced 'political correctness' . It wasn't until about 10 years ago that I heard about candidates being 'primaried'. Now is the key threat that Trump use to keep the House in line. Adherence to the party has made compromise and working across the aisle a thing of the past with the result that Congress is unable to address difficult or contentious issues forcing presidents to use E.O.s to address urgent issues that Congress refuses to address.

Immigration is a great example. Clinton, Dubya, Obama and Biden all tried to get Congress to update a failed, out of date immigration policy. The Senate (not subject to gerrymandering) would pass bi-partisan legislation on to the House only to see it die. The most recent example was Trump's threatening House members (From the party formerly known as Republicans) with being primaried in order to prevent Senate's bi-partisan immigration bill from being passed under Biden.

True to form, instead of pushing the House to pass the Senate's ready to go bill to fix immigration, Trump has opted to push the limits of presidential power via E.O.s. That E.O.'s can be reversed is NBD because the goal is not to fix immigration via Constitutional mechanisms, rather it's to expand his power at the expense of those mechanisms.

Because it is a reflection of the breakdown of basic human values and respect and the beginning of plutocracy. That's why it's bad. Very simple. The people were wrong. Very wrong. We will see if a semblance of the USA is remaining by the time of the next election.
