Wichita State is at Rice tonite at 7 p.m. Wichita State wins and we go to Fort Worth.
Woo woo!!! We're number 10, we're number 10!! Or maybe 11.Wichita State wins 63-59 and that gets Tulsa to Fort Worth. Rice and charlotte will now play in Denton
I'd say the chances of us dropping from a 10 to an 11 seed are pretty good. Wichita St has three reasons to beat us. Revenge for the loss we gave them on the road, the fact that if they lose to us again they will drop from a 7 seed to an 8 seed because Temple holds the tie breaker with them, and the chance that if they win they could rise to a 6 seed(if FAU loses to E Car.) because they hold the tie breaker over FAU. So their desire to win is going to be great. If that happens UTSA just needs to win @Charlotte.Wichita State wins 63-59 and that gets Tulsa to Fort Worth. Rice and charlotte will now play in Denton
Did you enjoy going to the Rockies game ?Woo woo!!! We're number 10, we're number 10!! Or maybe 11.

Agreed. Schools like TU have to quit focusing on freshman now, especially at the forefront of recruiting and building a team. It's year to year now so you've gotta forget them. If you want to use your last spot or two on a freshman that's great...but not to build a program.1. The coach needs to be able to be a portal specialist aiming correctly toward a very few players with the limited NIL funds.
2. He can't miss on these top 3 recruits.
3. Must be able to be a great x and o coach and get your best players open shots from their best spots.
4. Must be well liked by the players, media and fans.
5. Must concentrate on getting Juniors, Seniors, and Graduates out of the portal who are high level players already at other schools, even lower conferences. Forget about Freshmen unless they are sons of the staff who will stay with the program.
I actually think the opposite. If you're going to have to recruit your entire team every year, it's probably better to do it with all-star Freshmen and play moneyball as best you can with the rest of the team via NIL transfers. We're not going to outbid the big boys for the transfers that can actually be focal points year in and year out.1. I don't understand any of your post. Each statement contradicts the other. We have to get all conference players from the Sun Belt, Southland, and smaller conferences and it only takes three with big NIL. No we cannot outbid Memphis for all conference AAC or MVC players but we can outbid Rice , ECU, Tulane , etc for 3 players at a lower level . They need to be Seniors or Grads. I don't think you can win with all-star freshmen like you say. First of all we can't recruit all-star freshmen as they go to the top 3 conferences. If we get a good one like Smikle who was overlooked, then we have to be able to keep him until his Junior year when he can truly help.I actually think the opposite. Most of all, don't expect to have any kid freshman, transfer, JUCO, etc... for more than a single season. As soon as they show value they're going to get swallowed by P5's.
We need to become Dortmund / Ajax.
It's amazing how much things have changed, when Konkol started, it seemed like a great opportunity to go after guys who were highly recruited in HS, went to a big conference school and didn't get any time as a FR. They're risky bc they basically flamed out as FR but have the potential that made them 4 star recruits in HS. Fast forward 2 years and NIL makes that unworkable since the guys you salvage as sophomores just get bought as juniors and most it turns out flamed out for a reason.I don't understand any of your post. The high bluechips freshmen (one and done types) tend to go to bluechip programs, but everyone is so busy trying to play the transfer market that they can't put as much into their HS recruiting.I don't understand any of your post. We are too small to compete in the SEC/Big 10. We're not to small to compete in the aac. But I'm sure you could do Moore's job holding your breath. We've already failed with the freshman route. And it wasn't all because of Konkol's coaching ability. I'm assuming with a little more money, Konkol will be expected to raise the age limit of his team. The high bluechips freshmen (one and done types) tend to go to bluechip programs, but everyone is so busy trying to play the transfer market that they can't put as much into their HS recruiting.
You're not going to win trying to play the NIL transfer market.... it's just not going to work. We're too small.
I don't think we really truly tried the freshman route. We are too small to compete in the SEC/Big 10. We're not to small to compete in the aac. Several of those transfers were sophomores & redshirt freshman who didn't play during their freshman year because of injuries, difficulties w/ coaches, or just lack of playing abilities compared to the upper class players on their teams. So they really came to us as redshirt freshman, or redshirt freshman like players. I consider their failures as not that different from the true freshmen failures. For that reason I consider our freshman failures to be much more numerous than the true freshmen we signed.I don't think we really truly tried the freshman route.
This season
Last season
- + 4 Transfers
- +2 Freshmen
Konkol's First Season
- +7 Transfers
- +3 Freshmen
Haith's Final Season
- +2 Transfers (+retaining 4 transfers from Haith)
- +3 Freshmen
What I'm saying is that we've honestly tried to build through the transfer portal. A lot of the kids available to us are cast offs from 'better' programs and those are probably a bigger craps shoot than the Freshman considering they've already shown they haven't been able to succeed in the college game once. We might have a better time if we just become really good evaluators of the HS game and create a path that feeds into our program, kind of like the Club Soccer leagues in Europe. Install a basketball system that AAU teams can prepare their kids for...be it Boehiem's zones Nolan's 40 minutes of hell.
- + 5 Transfers
- +3 Freshmen
A lot of the transfers Tulsa is going to be able to get are going to be that type of player whether they were a redshirt freshman, or just sophomores who hardly played as freshman and flamed out of their previous program. Taking transfers from bigger schools who have shown they haven't warranted floor time is the definition of a gamble, but with the added insight that you've already made an observation about these players' ability to play college ball.Several of those transfers were sophomores & redshirt freshman who didn't play during their freshman year because of injuries, difficulties w/ coaches, or just lack of playing abilities compared to the upper class players on their teams. That's why I say the freshman route has failed with Konkol. Not to say another coach with better selection abilities, better developmental abilities, and better coaching abilities might not succeed where coach Konkol has failed. But I consider Konkol himself has failed with the freshman route.
Somebody asked Haggerty what the biggest difference was from last year and he said the winning. There are a lot of things that go into a person's experience at a school other than just the money. I'm not naive enough to think a guy will play here for $50k over $750k somewhere else, but I think some guys will take somewhat less to stay at a place that's special to them. We all know people who stay in jobs that pay less than they could make somewhere else because they like what they do. I volunteer at a non-profit, those people work 3 jobs to get by rather than going to a for profit place bc they believe in the mission. We absolutely have to be in the ballpark on $$ and also need to focus on making the experience great and then we might keep some guys. What competitor's going to want to stay here and lose 20+ games a year?? Step 1, get a decent coach.Need players that can shoot a basketball with success. Don't care what the classification is.. We have seen ve the past two years even transfers will move on if they have success here and we can't afford their asking price. Seen that last two seasons.
The X&O is a secondary problem. Unfortunately this regime is not good at either aspect of college coaching
We are just late to the game.. it hasnt been about being a student athlete for a long time.So it’s no longer about being a student athlete. None of these guys will graduate anywhere at the rate of transfers being allowed. A very small minority of them will ever play professionally. What exactly will they do with their lives after college?
