the City/County sends me a statement telling me how much Property Taxes I owe. I can pay it or protest it.

Why not do the the same thing with State and Federal Income Taxes?

Why not do the the same thing with State and Federal Taxes

It kind of is…. The government basically allows you the opportunity to determine how much income tax you owe by letting you conduct the filing.

There is an audit process so they have the opportunity to dispute your assessment. And there is are further dispute options as well.

You can’t dispute the fact that, given you held a job and earned taxable income, that you owed some sort of tax on that income.

Just like you can’t dispute the fact that if you own property you will owe some sort of t tax on the property. You’re only allowed to dispute the valuation / scale of the tax on that property…. Just like you’re only allowed to dispute the valuation / scale of tax on your income.
