Seems like if you convince a friendly country to give up its nuke ambitions you have some responsibility to protect them from the reason they had nuke ambitions. Otherwise might as well let everyone have nukes

That shouldn't be an excuse to not protect them from the state that did agree to protect them in this type of situation. It's in our interest.
I heard an associate say the fact that they gave up their nukes gave us permission to brush it off our hands, and clap done. BS
And not mind ignoring a large minority of their people. Those that think out loud or more likely silently, that they don't buy it. You can't speak too loudly when fearing thallium.
Although the media puts some pretty powerful tools in the hands of elected leaders. Consider Trump just during his campaign:

Would that include Canadians fathered by Fidel Castro? Or, can we launch them into the sun?.. asking for a friend.
Wonder how they will try to justify that or if they will bother at all? Putin was able to try and excuse things by talking about NATO’s eastward expansion.
Taiwan’s status in relation to US support has been the same for a very long time with few changes.
I assume we will hear “Taiwan has always been part of China. We do not consider it a sovereign nation” blah blah. Won’t matter in the end. If China believes there will be no U.S. response they will eventually move on Taiwan. Putin’s unopposed move into the Ukraine seems to have emboldened them.
What does it matter how they justify it? It's still going to be justification. They will still likely take back Taiwan. That would only matter if this was an argument decided by the merits the debate, on whether they wiil take back Taiwan.
Unfortunately 'a very long time' for us (75 years) is not a 'very long time' for China. China's 'century of humiliation' at the hands of the West and Japan created much deeper wounds that the US Civil War did for us. Right or wrong, it's a situation that we will have to contend with in figuring out how to deal with China.
You hope they reallocate chinese espionage from this program to other general espionage programs. But, I doubt all the necessary missions get reallocated. This is a dangerous game of semantics.
It is moves like this that make me fear the present democratic party. Policies like this are just as dangerous as boneheaded Trump regime policies.
