Anybody else see this? It's legitimately the worst series of no calls I've ever seen:

Here's an excerpt from a story by Terrance Payne pointing out the missed calls in that video.

1. A jump ball between Ball State's Franko House and Eastern Michigan's Brandon Nazione.

2. A travel by Nazione.

3. Another held ball.

4. Possibly another travel by Nazione (or a foul on Ball State).

5. Another held ball, this time between Eastern Michigan's Ethan Alvano and Ball State's Ryan Weber.

6. Possibly another foul, either on Alvano, or on Weber for swinging his elbow. Take your pick.

From a referee's standpoint, held balls are completely arbitrary. Typically they are only called as a safety precaution with the number of arms and hands grabbing and flailing. That said, if I am calling the game, I definitely cal the first one a held ball. The travel was blatant and should have been called. The foul...eh. The interesting thing would have been to look to see how tightly or loose the game was called for the previous 20 minutes...whatever you called then should be called now.

After rewatching it 2-3 times, the ref on the sideline closest to all the action who didn't make any call is most at fault. As a referee, you are taught that if you see a call, you make a call, regardless of whether it is in your zone of coverage on the floor or not. The travel call was the most blatant...both the Eastern Michigan player who initially grabbed the rebound and then the Ball State player who ripped it away both got away with extra steps (Ball St. player actually traveled TWICE within the sequence).

The refs want to let the players decide the outcome, but you have to call the game as it was intended, especially with those violations. What refs don't need to do is call every tick tack foul of a player with his hand resting on the hip of the ball handler, a rebounder who reaches over a player in front of him, etc.
