Saddest Irony of This Season?

It just proves there are no guaranteed rules of thumb in sports.

Sometimes retreads work out just fine.

Bill Bellicheck also did pretty well his second time around.

I think the irony is that self deprecating fans continue to be more destructive to TU than any team or coach. When a site is free and it is used to only be negative it is sad. Why? because any future player can read this and think, "Why would I even consider TU". And if the player does not : granny or mom will. I think the negative comments belong behind pay wall, they are doing not one iota good thing for TU, absolutely nothing that is positive. I do not appreciate 2-3 posters continuing to "bag" all the time. So, you are smarter, wiser, fine, we have all learned that - I believe we would be best served if this we cheered on our teams from beginning to the end. Perhaps even out in the city encouraging others to go to games, to attend TU, my gosh there is so much fans can actually do!!! Be proud and loud and maybe, our spirit and cheers would just be the extra push they would need to win in overtimes, 2 point games. I truly believe that every coach and player are doing their very, very best. I will always be their fan and I will cheer everyone of them on. And, the next time the game is close, remember guys/girls you have a small army of TU fans that believe you can do it. Sorry this just had to be said, because not all TU fans are so negative.

I'm just flabbergasted by this. Why don't you go say that same thing over on the football version of the board where we've actually had some trouble recruiting? Didn't seem like anybody was waving the TU flag over Monty over there recently.

Recruiting hasn't been our problem under the current basketball coach. When Tulsa has missed on really good players recently it has been due to a lot more than message board banter.

Everyone on this board supports TU. Everyone here wants the best for the program. Expressing dissatisfaction doesn't mean that we think kids shouldn't come to Tulsa, or that we don't try to get friends and family to come to games.

Trying to drown out criticism by saying people aren't supportive enough is asinine. I watch every game. I donate when I can. I try to get people to games. I try to get excited for a new season every year. I love the program. I love the history and the players that have come and gone. That doesn't mean I need to love every head coach who's ever coached for TU...

Go ask some folks about their opinions of Doug Wojcik. I didn't see too many people defending him in his last season.

I couldn’t agree more. Most of us have been sports fans all our lives and I personally have been a TU basketball fan for 40 years, we can see when there are issues with our teams but many of us also realize continuing negativity, and in some cases absolute unreasoning hate, is destructive and has no place here. Everyone is entitled to provide constructive criticism but there’s a big difference between “we just aren’t rebounding well and I think Josh Earley deserves more minutes because I think that could solve the problem” and “we can’t shoot, we can’t rebound, we probably won’t win another game, player X isn’t a D-1 player an players A, B, and C should never have been recruited”.

A lot of fans have been very positive and supportive up until this year. It’s year 6 and we weren’t good last year and this year looks about the same. The argument that people who give a lot of money and time to the program for many years are doing it a disservice by being critical is not good. The next step is we bail on the program that you no doubt didn’t support until six years ago at the earliest. Accept the criticism or let us find someone who will.

The truth is this is very light criticism compared to years past. You should have been here for Buzz, Phillips, and Wojcik.

Yup... I was trying not to be too negative the other day so I didn't mention it, but I thought this was pretty sad:

I knew that the KState game was going to be on.... I decided to go snowshoeing in 8 degree weather instead. The game didn't matter. If we had won, our record still wouldn't have been good enough to do much in regards to the post season unless we just demolished our competitors in league play. As it so happened, I got home just in time to catch the last 10 minutes of the game. Even knowing that the game meant pretty much nothing I was still disappointed that I had missed us playing relatively decently against a name opponent up to that point. Then we crapped the bed at the very end and there was a blown call (which wasn't Haith's fault). It still put me in a sour mood as did the UTA + CSU + ASU losses.

I want so bad for this team to be good and I feel like they just keep punching me in the gut. I mean, we're not to Browns, Red Sox, Cubs level ineptitude by any means... but I just think we could be doing so much better without that much changing.

Many of us react this way because we really, really care. TU sports is part of our identity. And the reason to join a discussion board is to share feeling and opinions with other fans.

I for one am a glass half full guy most of the time, but eventually you have to call things out as the same issues repeat.

Phillips had ONE supporter on this board the season he resigned. I don't think that person posts anymore. I'm not sure Wojcik had any.

Heirman and Idlet supported Wojcik, brau brau. They posted a couple of times. But other than them, no. Both he and JP clearly stayed one year longer than they should have and people were PISSED.

By comparison, this board had been fairly civil and civilly fair. We still can’t shoot from perimeter and don’t defend the perimeter. That’s the story. This year we haven’t been as good at working the refs, either.

Bluesister expresses an insightful, meaningful and positive post while the negative ones try to justify their opinions. As for me , I’m as guilty as the rest . We have been to the mountain with Nolan, Tubby and Bill and it was great , but the last seventeen years have been slim Pickens . I like the players on this years team and I know they’re trying .

Agree 100%!

I still see Mikey at all the home games. Like many of us he so wants this team to be so much better than they have shown thus far. It seems that since Self left that our M.O. has been to lose 90+% of the games where we are the underdog, lose 50+% of the toss- up games, and win most of the games where we are favored. Unfortunately that will never get the team to post-season and only produce mediocre results in league play. Haith has yet to prove that he can recruit and coach the team over this hill. Phillips and Wijcik couldn't get over that hill and that is why they are no longer here.

So in your opinion, if it were not for this board, recruits and their families would not know that we lost to Ark St and Colo St and are on pace to miss the tournament for the 5th time in Haith's 6 years? I'm skeptical. I'm pretty sure they'd figure that out on their own (HS BB players have been known to check ESPN and I'm pretty sure other schools' coaches will enlighten them if not). You're not going to convince most fans to be rah rah when the program is stinking, if you blast them for being frustrated, all you'll do is encourage them to drift away and never come back. Is not giving a crap anymore better than being angry and frustrated? With football and basketball in the dumps and the insanity of TU Committed, we really risk losing people not just for BB but for the university as a whole, forever.

What she appears to be saying to me has nothing to do with wins and losses but rather the unnecessary insulting of players who are out there playing their hearts out. You can deny it all you want but it happens after every game and this year it seems to be happening win or lose.

Well, Our conference slate is 0-0. Let's all give em' one more shot at redemption. But if we falter with this highly talented group,( "my best in 6 years") then the blame has to fall somewhere. NOT ON THE PLAYERS.

Those of us like you and me who have been on these boards forever have seen this particular argument a lot of times, pretty much any time one of our teams underperforms. I personally haven't noticed it being worse than before (though it always feels bad since it's when the team isn't where we want it) - but to be honest, I really don't follow the team or this board much anymore. I stuck through thick and thin no matter what because I loved TU and TU athletics are part of TU, but TU Committed did it for me. In one sense I'm part of the problem, but in another I'm great - I'm not bagging on players, so I'm good (mainly because I couldn't name more than 4 players on this year's team).

Message boards exist for fan emotion.

It’s too positive with wins, and way too negative following losses.

And...for sure, fan apathy has set in at TU. Deservedly so. It doesn’t make us “bad fans”. It just means we’re using the message board for our feelings/opinions.

Most other message boards are WAY more aggressive than TU’s.

And...message boards don’t affect recruiting on a measurable scale.

I’m all for positive and negative posts...everyone should feel open to post their opinions.

Food for thought.....I have watched TU for 73 years now...Some great
highs and some (too many lately) heart breaking lows....Back when the
world seemed like it was going to end with a loss, there sometimes was
anger.....Not any more.....I realize that everyone has frailties...The players
do, the coaches do, and as fans, so do we....

The most frustrating thing about this team is that it so close to being
really good, but somehow seems to make fatal mistakes....Sometimes
we seem slow to make obvious adjustments, but other times we look
like world beaters.....All of this at times occurring in the same half!

I'm not sure we have seen the best of this team yet....Transfers (1),
JUCOs (2), and freshmen (2) all take a while to settle in....Let's see
how this all plays out before we give up on them.....
