Pardon my ignorance, but I was wandering, are RPI's affected during conference tournaments? The reason I ask is the #1 team is typically paired with the worst team (not taking into account first round bye) is it fair to negatively affect the top teams RPI when they were doing their job to earn the #1/#2 spot? Or are the games so late into the season that playing a > 200 rpi team really doesn't matter?

All games count towards the RPI calculations and consideration of the NCAA tournament committee. I think it is unfair that there are like 3 conferences whose tournament finals are on Selection Sunday as it adds undue pressure on the committee to rearrange brackets and scheduling if something insane happens, i.e. #9 in B1G makes the final and may take a bubble team out. The SWAC always has a Sunday final and their champion always gets slotted to play in the #16 seed play-in game.

Holy crap! I'm not sure I like it considering our current tenuous position. It also appears we are the last game before the unveiling of the field. I'm sure the B1G's game is about the same time as well on CBS.

That said, it beats the 10am (9am El Paso time) Saturday game. Can't imagine playing a game of that importance that early.

Hopefully it's not 9 a.m. tipoff anymore. Not that I'm opposed to having a cocktail that early.

Anyone playing Houston/UCF/USF/ECU will take a hit, even with a win. None of the bubble teams can afford to lose that game.

The committee generally has a rough dradft of the bracket completed Saturday night, with a handful of contingencies for the Sunday conf tourney finals. For instance if TU and SMU play for the AAC title, their seed lines will likely have been determined before the AAC championship game even tips off, both winning and losing scenarios.

It's not as easy as that because conference foes cannot meet before the round of 16. For instance, if TU and 11 before the final and likely to stay that way if it loses, then no big deal. However, if TU would then slot in at a 10 if it beat SMU in the final, you need to see who the 7, 2, and 15 seeds are to make sure they wouldn't play an AAC opponent in the 2nd round or round of 16. Well Temple might be as high as a 7 after things play out so there is that consideration. Also, if you have TU slotted for an 11 win or lose the final, then you might disrupt the play-in game for a couple of #11's or you may have to consider bumping TU to a 12 or up to a 10 based on whether or not you have them in the play-in based upon a loss in AAC final. That impacts a ton of teams and the bracket because of the above mentioned rule. Auto-quals can't be in the #11/#12 seeded play-in games. There's a lot at play...just thinking about it and the limited issues I threw out there makes my head hurt.

From my memory of past brackets the committee seems a lot lazier than the conventional wisdom. I have a feeling that the AAC and Big 10 finals (and possibly even the 1:00 games) will have no effect on seedings. The only impact is if a team not already in the field is involved.

The committee doesn't want to change anything based on a late game. The only problem is a team like UCONN who would not have made it without the championship. They would simply replace another team with them if that happened that would fit all the criteria. All the possibilities are set before the last games even start.
