Did anyone besides me not get their basketball parking passes in the mail in time for Wednesday's game?
this is the kind of BS that I've been talking about for months. way too much about TU that is embarrassing at the moment. like the entire OSU crowd laughing at our band during the football game.
The band isn’t offering scholarships to new, non-music majors this year. That’s going to continue to send the numbers in the wrong direction.I hate that for those kids. I know they work so hard. But the band is WAY too small. They also seem to lack some discipline (based on what I’ve seen at games).
one of the most important parts of the pageantry of college football is the band and ours just isn’t cutting it. Would be nice to see the band double in size, but really around a 200 piece band would be perfect for us.
I figured it was something like that. That’s a damn shame. Is that temporary or is that permanent? The band isn’t offering scholarships to new, non-music majors this year. That’s going to continue to send the numbers in the wrong direction.

I talked to employees from several departments over the summer trying to get information. It sounded like a change in philosophy on how academic and performance awards would be distributed going forward.I figured it was something like that. That’s a damn shame. That’s incredibly unfortunate. At one point over half of the band was made up on non-music major kids on various levels of scholarship. There were even TCC kids that came and participated in the band (something we should really look at bringing back).I talked to employees from several departments over the summer trying to get information. I hope it’s not permanent, but nothing I heard made it sound temporary.
There are very few freshmen and sophomores in this year’s band so they had better do something different and quick.
Even at our best levels for band, I don't think our band could have attracted a 200 piece band even with scholarships. I was offered a scholarship for 1/4 tuition, and was a very average non music major musician. (1987) And I believe we only had a 75-85 piece marching band and a 30 or 35 piece pep band for basketball 🏀.I hate that for those kids. I know they work so hard. But the band is WAY too small. During the graham era, the band was around 140 at its largest. 200 is just my opinion based on the size of most college marching bands. Our pep band for basketball is fine (for the most part).Even at our best levels for band, I don't think our band could have attracted a 200 piece band even with scholarships. If only french horns came with wi-fi and built in appsPreview of coming attractions: for various reasons, including band, there are fewer kids in band coming up.
I thought we called them freedom horns nowIf only french horns came with wi-fi and built in apps
Wow, I never even paid much attention to the size during the Graham era. That's a really large # for the Graham era. I would say 💭 we prolly were at our zenith then, for attracting participants in the band.During the graham era, the band was around 140 at its largest. 200 is just my opinion based on the size of most college marching bands. The size of the band would have been dwarfed by the size of Graham's ego... so, it might have gone unnoticed.Wow, I never even paid much attention to the size during the Graham era. Come on, this is genuinely hilarious for any of us who lived through early '00s.I thought we called them freedom horns now

It looked like less than 40 non-seniors tonight. Next year will be pretty slim unless something changes. That’s incredibly unfortunate. At some point, with numbers that low, there isn’t enough balance to put forth a legitimate ensemble. This may be the last year we see an actual marching band.It looked like less than 40 non-seniors tonight. Next year will be pretty slim unless something changes.
They could go back to speakers and do a minimal ensemble(w/rock tinge: bass, guitar 🎸, drums, & a few horns) , a slight variation on what Ron Predl did in the late 80's.At some point, with numbers that low, there isn’t enough balance to put forth a legitimate ensemble. Ron is a good guy. I took private lessons from him for a while. They could go back to speakers and do a minimal ensemble(w/rock tinge: bass, guitar 🎸, drums, & a few horns) , a slight variation on what Ron Predl did in the late 80's.
After several years, tonight was my final show as a band parent. I do hope they come up with something acceptable for next season. At some point, with numbers that low, there isn’t enough balance to put forth a legitimate ensemble. This may be the last year we see an actual marching band.
They'll probably go the way of Rice and Stanford "marching bands" where it is more of a club and somewhat disorganized disaster waiting to happenAt some point, with numbers that low, there isn’t enough balance to put forth a legitimate ensemble. Pros and cons there - but that just seems so rinky dink. I wish athletics kicked in some funds to subsidize the athletic portions of the band (marching band and basketball band). They'll probably go the way of Rice and Stanford "marching bands" where it is more of a club and somewhat disorganized disaster waiting to happen
I know TU cut some programs in the music dept. Is there also less $$ for that program? I guess marching band isn't part of the "we'll guarantee you a job" approach that TU has now.Pros and cons there - but that just seems so rinky dink. The school of music was gutted. I don’t know specifics, but based on the visible portion I can see, I would say yes.I know TU cut some programs in the music dept. Is there also less $$ for that program? I guess marching band isn't part of the "we'll guarantee you a job" approach that TU has now.
