Haith should be fired. And instead of blaming the effort of the team, he should apologize to the fans.
This group of seniors has constantly played down to the level of their opponent and oru is a perfect example. Haith did not shoot 22 - 58 from the field and 7 - 24 from the 3. After previous games where free throw shooting was bad they went 17 - 21 from the line.
These guys are seniors. They should know to bring it all to every game, yet they don't and haven't for their entire careers. That speaks less to coaching and more to the heart of the players!
If Harrison hits his FT's late this game is over. Over all 8 - 11, but missed during clutch time when seniors must step up... oru gave Harrison the 3 the whole game and he bricked them all going 0 - 5. Once he makes up his mind to drive, he almost never dishes out, thus he scoops up a prayer hoping for a foul. If there is no foul it equals a turn over and he was 5 - 10 on layups. Again Wright was a no show on offense (1-5)against a smaller opponent. oru basically played a collapsing man-to-man leaving Harrison open for the 3, thus giving them an extra man in the paint the whole game. Birt was brought in to shoot 3's and he delivered going 4-10 at that rate he should have taken 20 shots and we would have won going away!
This also goes back to Manning who brought in that small forward from Wyoming who was one and done at TU moving on to another school when Emegano(#15 & 26 pts. including the game winner) was begging to come to TU to play with his HS teammate Woodard. But Danny told him NO! Great move Manning!
Haith put the team in position to win, however our seniors did not execute nor did they deliver... When your big men go a combined 3 - 12 from the field this is not a good sign. Although this team is very athletic they are very average to poor when it comes to shooting from the field! Once again this loss goes back to the players and their heart and desire to win for the third straight year.
I also thought the effort was great. We just do not have basketball talent and teams have learned how to play us. Collapse the defense and prevent Harrison from easy drives. Guard Woodard with best defender denying him the ball in scoring positions and letting every other player wide open on the outside. It is easy defense and works except when we are smoking hot, i.e. WSU.I agree with mcane that it was not the effort of the team. I was proud of the effort. We have just not recruited good shooters........bottom line that goes back to Wojcik, Manning , and Haith.
Totally agree. The effort is there. I don't ever think our players are being lazy or not trying to win. When the issue is skill, the answer seems to be "well try harder" and that never works. This is REAL simple....we are not as skilled offensively as some of our opponents.I think this team plays hard...very hard. This is the same team from 3 years ago. They just struggle to shoot the basketball. That's everything in this game!!! Every coach will tell you..."bottom line...we need to make shots".
Think about that...the most critical part of a sport this team doesn't do well. As a result, winning will always be a battle. To me, this shows the character of these kids...they are outmanned most games from an offensive standpoint.
Poor perimeter shooting
Poor interior offensive skill
Poor interior defensive skill
That's tough! But, the effort is there...
Just like when Ted Owns told John Phillips about Joey Graham and his brother , but TU was'nt interested. How about Caleb Green ? TU was'nt interested in him either and took the stiff Charles Somebody from Podunk, OK.+1 Sepp.... Nice story about the failed recruitment of Emegano by Manning.
Paul Pressey with those long arms was a great defender and played exceptional ball pressure.lawpoke87 and Tulsa 76 are right on in their assessment. Nolan's first team was not a great shooting team but made tons of layups off steals and that got the FG% up. Coley couldn't shoot past 8 feet from the goal so Robinson and Self asked him to defend and he proceeded to lead the nation in steals making easy basket after easy basket.
We've seen successful teams who struggled to hit jump shots. The solution....create turnovers which lead to easy buckets and push the ball after opponents missed shots. We knew going in that these guys were a poor shooting team. Where's the pressure defense? Where's the traps? We will do this type of thing in spirts but then fall back into our normal gap control defense. For us to be successful, defense must lead to easy offense. Yet to see this for forty minutes. You think Self would have these guys lying back defensively then shooting 25 threes in the halfcourt? Coaching philosophy must change.
