Just saw a really interesting breakdown of the Brad Underwood (Illinois) spread offense with side discussions on Mike Boynton (OK. State) and Dana Altman (Oregon) who both run it a ton. I thought the most interesting part of the video is when they get into a discussion about Altman's opinion on the necessity for the adoption of a ball screen offense to be paired with the spread offense for recruiting purposes. (Kids want to play ball screen so they can prepare for the NBA)
I also found it interesting that one of the inefficiencies of the spread in college is that it flows into the pinch-post (triangle) made famous by Tex Winter and Phil Jackson. That can lead to a lot of inefficient midrange shots being taken late in the shot clock. I think I'm going to go back and look at the Illinois vs. Loyola NCAA matchup and see how Loyola was able to completely dominate it.
I know this is a bit in the weeds for this board... but I'd like a discussion other than how much our coach does or does not suck.
