Official HC Speculation Thread

"Pulls name from consideration" often means "I have been told I am not getting the job."
In this case, saw the NIL issues and other University issues and declined. But you are right, sometimes that's the case. He wanted the job, I was told. There is a systemic problem at 800 S Tucker that is being exposed.

Sharp Chapel?

If Symons doesn’t have confidence he can successfully run the TU football program, I’m glad he pulled out of the running. We need a new coach who knows he can be successful at TU.

So Marion is going to be unemployed and we can't find anyone to take our job. I mean, fate?

The worst may have been the hiring of Gragg as Athletic Director at The University of Arkansas and announced on all media outlets and the subsequent cheers from our message board. The Arkansas Board of Trustees somehow heard about this and rescinded the offer. Gragg came unenthusiastically back to TU.
Definitely a really good example of how a lot of folks on here hurt the school.

Assuming this is true, which I highly doubt it is, thanks for letting every agent and coach and/or their wives interested in the job know what a terrible place to be Tulsa is. And letting all the massive egos in the sport that won’t take a job Symons turned down because they are bigger than a job he doesn’t want know we aren’t really serious. Not to mention every kid interested in transferring here we need to replace the 40 that have left.

Yall want to know how we end up with a hire like Wilson? This is part of it.

Harmon really ought to consider taking these boards down during a search.

And some of y’all ought to remember this isn’t the water cooler at work.

Thats really really sad if people in the "industry" that have way more knowledge than us, use this message board as a guide. I guess I will just start taking polls online about what to buy my wife for Christmas. I mean they know her better than me, right? I am not saying it isnt true. It just is a head scratcher for me.

Or "there was a systemic problem exposed."

I suspect this search is part of resolving it.
Exactly. IF, & it’s a big IF there was a systemic problem, the new leadership in the TU athletic department is in the process of moving forward with new guidelines. Nationally, everyone agrees there needs to be more guidelines, regulations and more transparency in the new NIL era.

10 days ago, TU AD Justin Moore sent an email to all season ticket holders that clearly expressed a goal for TU football to compete for conference championships, bowls & a spot in the college football playoffs. It included a university wide alignment to support the players in today’s era.

Those clear plans haven’t changed in the last 10 days.

This is really, truly rich. Your entire MO is "I have secret inside info that nobody else has and boy, things are bad. Don't complain bc the admin has done everything possible with as bad as things are. " I literally thought the post you quoted was from you and had to do a double take when it was someone else. It's fine, it's nice to hear the official party line of the administration, what they tell themselves and others to justify how they've done their job, even if it can be whiplash inducing (the shift from Levitt to Brad broke my ankles). I can't decide, are you upset that someone's pissing in your territory or is the admin's position this time around to minimize the issues?

It’s a multi million dollar business deal. And while that’s common at TU, perhaps too common that causes hires like this to be de-emphasized, it’s still a lot of money for the coaches involved. Every data point possible is collected. And what is learned here may be tested against industry knowledge. As we saw with the Gragg incident.

You do know that the board was much more pleasant during your extended absence. Was it self imposed?
Lol

You know I can read this board with out logging in or see old posts when I am logged in? I have been coming here since AZ's actual message board when we still used dial up, so miss me with that bs. Gmoney is still here making an ass of himself, aston is still shouted down, Huffy is still the inside guy.

This board changed in the late 2000s and certain people quit consistently posting here. It is a extremely small sample of TU fans who tend to think alike.

We have a couple older posters who are clearly getting more grumpy.

A few asses and negative people who continue to nay say.

A few clueless posters some of whom fall in the previous groups.

A few knowledgeable posters.

What we don't have is a steady increase of new fans posting, mostly because its tedious, because this group attacks anyone who doesn't fall in line with their group think, because we have done a piss poor job of reaching out to attract new fans, a failing of our past three ADs.

I don't see any of this changing. Well except you and a couple other people continuing to be more and more grumpy.

Don't worry Huffy will be in to tell us about our indoor practice facility thats coming (last 10 years) aston will let us know who his favorites are (last 15 years) and Gmoney will still not be contributing (their lifetime). So not much will change.

Feel free to yell at me to get off "your" grass lol

Don't expose him like that one of the other regulars will come along and tell you your knowledge and experience don't count because you won't drink their Kool Aid. Let all these posters learn through experience that its bull:crap:

Well said TU4ever2. We haven't had many new people joining, that's a fair point. And you're dead-on accurate about gay$ not contributing to anything productive in this lifetime... I do like Huffy's contributions on here, whether he's always right or not isn't my place to say. I've tried to bring people up to a Tulsa game with me, but the team has been so abysmal the past 3 to 4 years, I can't in good conscience invite anyone to go up there with me. Hell, I don't even want to spend my money to watch us get curb stomped by lesser programs (historically speaking)....

Sounds like he got cold feet. Usually when I see this, there have been signs along the way that the other side wasn't fully committed but the dumped party either wasn't experienced enough to recognize them or chose to ignore them and hope they could strong arm the deal across the finish line. I don't think I've ever been surprised when a deal fell apart. Either way, you gotta cut him loose if there's not the commitment there or if you think you have the fish on the hook, you gotta get him in the boat, that's the job. I'll chalk it up to first time AD, we'll wait to see if he's a closer or not.

The idea that the guy was going to bed the night before signing the contract and thought on a lark "maybe I'll check out their fan forums" and then was like "holy f&*k, I can't go there" is so preposterous that I can't believe it's seriously being offered. It's really bad if that's the best CYA the admin can come up with. I mean, not only is it preposterous but "blame your biggest fans" is almost never a good strategy even in the vary rare situations where it's true.

But this came from press outlets. Not this board.
I don’t have time to keep up with what’s in the press and how that is interpreted and twisted here.

Folks on here should know that “reporters” are told things for reasons other than the free exchange of ideas. Many of them print and tweet things for cash from agents to supplement their income. To hurt one agency and help another. Or grind old complaints as some in our local press too often do.

There aren’t many agents at this level of FBS. They have more candidates than openings. They steer their best candidates to the best jobs. In part to maximize their income but also to generate good will from successful hires that lead to future business. And build up on empire. Cynics will tell you a half dozen agents run the sport through the ADs and coaches they represent.

They form those rough pecking orders in part from their impressions of the programs and how much they can/will pay.

They draw those conclusions from friends, coaches, colleagues, the press, and yes even message boards.

During the last round, if you believe published reports, Wilson was in a tranche of five other coaches that was presented to five to seven schools. We got the short end of the stick, even though our resources, and what we paid Wilson, was greater, much greater, than other schools interviewing those candidates.

20 years ago, this board was considered a university asset. Opposing coaches on multiple occasions complimented this board for its decorum. One even said we were “classy.”

So if we had more money, paid the coach more, were in a much better conference, and we were located in a more favorable recruiting area, why did our hire get delayed and fall to the 5th of 5?

It had to do with intangibles in my opinion. That agents pushed other schools instead of us. I believe that because, as basketball fans might remember, the FBI wire tapped shoe reps and agents saying “they weren’t going to help Tulsa.”

And I have reason to believe that the same thing may be happening in this search.

So without singling you out my good dr, if you don’t have $10 million, the best thing you can do in this search is be patient and do your best to avoid expressing unreasonable expectations or preferences for particular candidates. Especially those that for reasons wholly unrelated to TU will never be the coach here.

Nobody wants a job where the fans expressed wanting ten other coaches or an alum.

Try to be positive about the process and positive about the school.

There’s no reason for other folks to repost negative stuff that they don’t have idea whether it’s true or not. Nearly everyone on this board has pieces of info but cannot know the full picture. By design. So that doesn’t help either and only benefits the agents who are competing with the names mentioned or omitted.

Yall are free to go, it’s not up to me to stop you, but you only increase the chances that you get what you deserve.

I simply think this NIL issue came through the press and folks here are simply reading and reacting to it. That's what message boards are about.

But it is about the past. Not how we are positioning for the future. If there is any truth to it (hard to tell), it is unrelated to Justin Moore and his vision and plans for TU athletics IMO.

And no - definitely I don't have 10 million dollars period though I wish I did!
