But this came from press outlets. Not this board.
I don’t have time to keep up with what’s in the press and how that is interpreted and twisted here.
Folks on here should know that “reporters” are told things for reasons other than the free exchange of ideas. Many of them print and tweet things for cash from agents to supplement their income. To hurt one agency and help another. Or grind old complaints as some in our local press too often do.
There aren’t many agents at this level of FBS. They have more candidates than openings. They steer their best candidates to the best jobs. In part to maximize their income but also to generate good will from successful hires that lead to future business. And build up on empire. Cynics will tell you a half dozen agents run the sport through the ADs and coaches they represent.
They form those rough pecking orders in part from their impressions of the programs and how much they can/will pay.
They draw those conclusions from friends, coaches, colleagues, the press, and yes even message boards.
During the last round, if you believe published reports, Wilson was in a tranche of five other coaches that was presented to five to seven schools. We got the short end of the stick, even though our resources, and what we paid Wilson, was greater, much greater, than other schools interviewing those candidates.
20 years ago, this board was considered a university asset. Opposing coaches on multiple occasions complimented this board for its decorum. One even said we were “classy.”
So if we had more money, paid the coach more, were in a much better conference, and we were located in a more favorable recruiting area, why did our hire get delayed and fall to the 5th of 5?
It had to do with intangibles in my opinion. That agents pushed other schools instead of us. I believe that because, as basketball fans might remember, the FBI wire tapped shoe reps and agents saying “they weren’t going to help Tulsa.”
And I have reason to believe that the same thing may be happening in this search.
So without singling you out my good dr, if you don’t have $10 million, the best thing you can do in this search is be patient and do your best to avoid expressing unreasonable expectations or preferences for particular candidates. Especially those that for reasons wholly unrelated to TU will never be the coach here.
Nobody wants a job where the fans expressed wanting ten other coaches or an alum.
Try to be positive about the process and positive about the school.
There’s no reason for other folks to repost negative stuff that they don’t have idea whether it’s true or not. Nearly everyone on this board has pieces of info but cannot know the full picture. By design. So that doesn’t help either and only benefits the agents who are competing with the names mentioned or omitted.
Yall are free to go, it’s not up to me to stop you, but you only increase the chances that you get what you deserve.
