you remember last years first game right? i mean i like wins, but its still FAU by the skin of our teeth. I want conference championships again, not getting lucky when FAU has 200 yards of penalties against them. i remember being excited last year beating tulane. I'll wait to get excited if we can keep OU within 3 TDs.We had 41 points and almost 600 yards of offense before OT. Dane threw for over 420 yards and averaged more than 20 yards per completion. And we won, which ain't nothing after the last few years. With a completely new offense and staff. I kinda feel like people are so much in the habit of complaining that they don't know what else to do. I think this was a very good first game.

Thats fair. I just need to let go of the days of Paul and David...I guess if you were hoping for a conference championship this year then I can see why you're disappointed. But that was a delusional expectation, there's only so much progress we could make on D and with as hideous as we were last year, even the best case wouldn't be enough. It'll take a couple years.
But if you're ranking our issues, I don't think Dane makes the top 10.
We won't hold OU to 3 TDs, but much better TU teams than this haven't done that.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/532273/dane-evansThe guy who played QB today? I would not have recognized him at all if his name was not on the jersey. Below average QB? I suppose it is all relative. But the QB today is better than the guy last year by a mile...or at least 424 yards.
I was just thinking about how similar this game was to last year's opener. It is a fair comparison. But, Dane just looked better. Same yardage, sure. But it took him 20 less pass attempts today. He is better.http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/532273/dane-evans
Tulane last year... he had 2 more TDs with same yardage. So, same QB, yes. But I'll give him a break.
thats why its hard to get my hopes up.I was just thinking about how similar this game was to last year's opener. It is a fair comparison. But, Dane just looked better. Same yardage, sure. But it took him 20 less pass attempts today. He is better.
Struggling to get four wins for two years. We have been through much worse than that. We moved back to Tulsa in 2000 and bought our season tickets. Try living through two one win seasons and then we can. I have seen amazing football at 11th and Harvard in my 43 years and I have no doubt that I will see it again. Riley, Frerotte, Penn, Ostroski, Gage, Mills, Chamberlain and many others have come and gone and many more will come and go. This administration has shown more commitment to athletics than any other I have seen. Upping the ante to bring Montgomery and Haith in, the indoor practice facility and many other exciting things happening. We will win consistently again and I don't think it will be long. Last year we got worse with each game and this year I anticipate us getting better each game.Honestly all of my pessimism stems from being a young TU fan during the GJ/Paul/David years and damn good football. Now it's just struggling to get to 4 wins a year and it drives me nuts.
Let's talk d lines. I thought FAU had a terrific d line. Their left tackle abused us I thought we were in real trouble when Gladd went done late in the first half. One of the biggest factors in the game was the huge # of holds and hits to face called on their o line. Give our guys credit for that. They couldn't block our guys. Despite giving up lots of yards, I thought our Front 4 did great. All those holds don't happen in a vacuum. They also looked fresh at the end. Finally, I hope Smith is OK.
Ya, this game would have been a lot more under control if we had just cut down on some of the miscues. The do inked field goal and the fumble on our own 20 stand out to me as plays that really were preventable. Brewer will probably get an earful for that in the film room and at practice. We probably win by 10 in regulation if it wasn't for those plays.
As far as Dane goes, when he has decent pass protection he's doing a good job "taking what the defense gives him" and "giving his guys a chance to make a play" which are both things we heard Monty preaching in the preseason. The problem is, on the 2 interceptions (especially the second one) the receivers did very little to play the ball.
Other than that we just need the defense to work on tackling physically instead of lunging arm tackles and trying to jab the ball out to create fumbles. BY's defense relies on creating turnovers and we have to work on getting that ball on the ground.
Hobbs could have broken up that second interception. Although he also dropped a sure TD pass, I like a 6-5 guy that can run. He may be a force down the road.
