Memphis Post Game Thoughts

Two more comments.

Down 9 points with 5:45 on the clock when Harrison steals and scores and Ray then steals the inbounds pass to make it a 5 point game. The crucial turnaround.

Harrison plays the last 6:19 with 4 fouls and it doesn't change his game at all.

+1000 Watched it again last night. That was after we seemed to start breaking our own back missing two straight front-ends down nine. The first steal was straight out of a memory of Eric Coley.... Then Ray stole the inbound somehow, we're not even sure how that happened. That happens, as the douche color guy is saying Ray fouled Dumpy before Harrison ripped him.

Shaq and Ray stole it for us.

Absolutely.

Talk about finding a way...

(although the announcers went on and on and on about Ray not getting a clean steal)

I flashed back to a similar sequence at ORU two years ago. After a bucket (maybe a 3), Ray stole the end bounds, fed it out to a guard and TU popped a 3. It turned that game around and seemed to deflate ORU, as it did Memphis last night.

Some of you are missing the point on the BPI. At least what I think is the point.

ESPN should NOT be creating or pushing ratings systems. How good or bad of a system is irrelevant. Frankly, there are already 100 ratings systems out there, plenty of which are good.

I had sworn off the network but have had to watch it this year because of the AAC contract. I watch only our games or other AAC games and refuse to watch any of their studio stuff.

ESPN needs to cover sports, not control sports.

Their goal with the BPI? Their goal is to eventually dictate who gets in to the tourney. They can already influence, but they want flat out control.

JMHO.

Just saw Haith's post game locker room talk. GREAT STUFF. He just has a knack in keeping our guys grounded and focused. To paraphrase he said this is a great win, GREAT WIN. But don't lose sight of the big picture. We are in position to win a championship. We control our own destiny in that goal. Let's enjoy this but don't lose sight of that goal.

Look at the last two coaches we've had... Imagine how much different it is with Haith... That dude can light a fire.

I posted a comment about this under the highlights thread. I think DM might eventually get there but right now Haith's experience allows him to see the subtle things that need to be done to keep the energy flowing and spirits up. This team is in for something special...

1. I hope the color commentator is not on the committee.

2. Ray was outstanding.

3.Harrison's 3 was perfect form. Just like practice.

4. Have to feel sorry for Pastner and his highly rated recruits.

5. The offensive goal tend by Wright almost cost us everything.

6. Cincy is everything now.

7. SMU on other side of bracket.
Can't disagree with your assessment.

I would add I didn't like taking out Ray for Curtis and it burned Haith. Curtis gave up the offensive rebound.

Wright tried to emphatically dunk late on our miss, that could have won the game.

Shaq, throw the ball into Ray at the end of the game. Just give it to him.

GO TU!!!!
That color commentator was an embarrassment....I saw five or six
significant fouls on the guy guarding juice, none of which were called,
and this guy was complaining about ticky-tac fouls being called....He
was very biased, and should be very low on ESPN's totem pole...

KC Shaq played one helluva game, but his stiff legged free throws
cost us a lot of points down the stretch.....I keep marveling at his
athletic ability, and don't remember us having anyone quite like him
in that regard.....

Shaq made two or three major errors on the late five second call...
First, he carried the ball out of bounds instead of having the official
throw or hand it to him....He had his back to the court, and according
to my watch, the ref started counting as soon as Shaq stepped out
of bounds...By the time he turned around, he was prob. already at
a two count.....Secondly, he could have run the base line since
Memphis had scored....That play could have been a season altering
mistake.....

I did not like the Curtis for Ray substitution....Ray is physically stronger,
and a great free thrower in late game situations....

Pastner isn't adjusting to the upgrade in opposing players very well, and
in particular, the upgrade in opposing coaches.....So far, he is a middle
of the roader in the AAC.....He has a great recruiting situation, and has
an opportunity to excel.....It will be interesting to see how it pans out...

Ray had a great game, and in fact, while the stats understate what he
has accomplished over our last run of games, he has been a very large
part of our success.....His play late in the games has been just short of
amazing.....

I thought the same thing - no need to run over and make a mistake in that situation. The only thing worse would have been a steal by Memphis. Maybe it would have been better for Haith to call TO. But a lot of this is caused from a coaches philosophy that "when in doubt" just get the ball inbounded. Some want a designated inbounder, others just want any player to get to the ball and pass it to whomever is most open. But when you know the press is coming, it might be better to get organized. But alls well that ends well. Next time, plan for the worst.

IMO
