Memphis is either bold or crazy

They got one just before the game but if they loose the challenge, They have to forfeit a game they led by 30 before half and could be a bad as costing them Post Season. I think I would have waited on the NCAA decision.

They could have beat UIC easily without him. If you are correct about losing that game due to forfeit, then that was really stupid. Almost as stupid as Penny helping him move.

It doesn’t even sound like Penny is disputing paying g the $11,500 to move the kid’s family to Memphis. That’s the shady part of the AAU ball. If Penny isn’t Memphis’ coach and Wiseman went somewhere else, likely not an issue. There’s some issues about amateurism because essentially Penny paid the kid to come play basketball.

NCAA statement about playing him and "Memphis responsible for any eligibility issues" implies NCAA is p'od. It makes no sense to risk a DQ or NCAA opportunity vs. UIC.

Maybe there is a worse AD than ours.

Speaking of AD's, Cincy's left for USC recently, do they want ours?

Maybe ours isn’t good at getting court orders.

Memphis, much like "The Tark" in his day, seems to stick their collective tongues
out at the NCAA, almost daring them to do anything about it....

You're right....The NCAA has probably had their fill of Memphis....Their last three
coaches, save for Tubby have lived on (or beyond) the edge when it comes to
ethical recruiting behavior.......

The out come of this current situation will tell us a lot about the NCAA having
gonads or not, and may (or sadly, may not) tell us a lot about how closely the
NCAA is going to monitor the rogue recruiters like the Memphis coaches.....

Lol. Peso didn't even make it two years before the NCAA was catching him.

For the record, Penny pulled the same stuff with his high school team. The state athletic association took him to court over it. Got dragged out, believe state playoffs ended before it was decided.

Just a guess but the NCAA probably assumed this would happen again, so we begin after game one so the NCAA can have the time to fight the court battle.

They are going to have to realize at some point that the University of Memphis is not UNC. At some point Memphis fans are going to have to realize that their program just isn't any good unless they cheat.

Meanwhile Tubby will have HighPoint dancing by next year and Memphis will be on a post season ban. Had they kept Tubby they are likely an NCAA team last year. Memphis getting what they deserve:joy:

Ours would be a fantastic fit for Cincy. Does someone have his resume the can submit? I’m sure he could use the help, being that he has been loaded down by all of the hardship waivers and appeals that his office has been so diligent in submitting for the benefit of our student athletes.

I can't remember which sports talk host was talking about this but the NCAA decides on eligibility. The NCAA is not the organization suspending a player...that's the school that decides whether or not the player plays. When Chase Young's eligibility was questioned, Ohio State immediately made it so he could not play. NCAA said his eligibility will be restored after this weekend.

Memphis' tough spot was the NCAA initially cleared Wiseman back in May. Then after game 1, they said their clearance was in error. Had an AAU booster/coach not named Penny Hardaway (who also gifted the U of Memphis $1M a few years ago) given the money to the Wisemans to move, this is a moot point. The fact that Penny paid for them to do so and that he is now the Memphis HC makes this a huge entanglement of recruiting violations. My guess is Memphis offers to suspend him through the end of December and the NCAA allows him to be eligible starting January 1st, just in time for AAC play. Personally it smacks of the Emmanuel Mudiay situation at SMU. It's shady. Wiseman might be better off playing in China for a season before getting drafted into the NBA. Kid is big-time talented.

If they have any discretion, NCAA will never let him play another game. Memphis is one of those schools that is forever on the list.

If Memphis is smart, they don't let him play. NCAA just decides on eligibility.

Does anyone find it fishy that Penny pays for this kid to come to Memphis to play AAU ball for Penny THEN Penny lands the Memphis job followed by Wiseman's commitment? I know the NCAA deemed Penny a booster in this case, but this is as bad as Kansas paying for players w/ adidas' help. I wonder if Penny had already put the wheels into motion on Tubby's ouster when he made this payment knowing he would get the job.

My question on Chase Young...why didn't the person who gave him the money for the ticket just buy the ticket for the girlfriend. That way there is no direct tie to Young and the girlfriend simply says she borrowed money to go to the game and has since paid him back. Anyone think there are questions the NCAA is not asking on purpose?

It's funny because this is karma biting arrogant Memphis fans and admin in the a$$ for the way they treated Tubby

Yeah. For the most part, Memphis "basketball" fans are a different breed than Memphis "football" fans. Growing up there, almost everyone was a Memphis basketball fan and a Rebel, Vol, or Hog football fan. And, as much as I hate to admit it, the whole Tubby thing just sucked. I like/defended Tubby on the Memphis message board and now I'm derisively known as a "tubby lover".

There are worse things then being a Tubby Lover. There are websites that promote Tubby Lovers.

How long does Penny last at this level?

GO TU!!!!
My guess is as long as he wants to. They will defend and facilitate anything he does, and he doesn’t need the money, so it seems more of a hobby than a job.

He'll get a show cause and Memphis on a post season ban soon enough, don't worry.

Memphis will have the best talent in the conference for as long as Penny is there. NCAA is likely the only thing which could stop them.

NCAA ruling today: Wiseman is suspended for all games against the P5/6 whereby he could help the AAC improve it's profile, but will be allowed to play against AAC teams to prevent them from earning an at-large.

For real. He's now suspended until January 12th and for some reason will be forced to pay money to a charity, even though the whole thing is about how he's supposed to be an amateur athlete. You can always count on the ncaa to make the worst ruling imaginable.

Where is a college kid going to cough up 11 K?

Does Memphis have to forfeit the first few games when they defied the NCAA?

If Wiseman wasn't going to be the first player taken in the draft next year this would not have happened.

Compare that to a kid that would like to play this year at a neighboring school because his coach got canned, in that case the NCAA says HELL NO ?

Sound familiar

Stupid

GO TU!!!!

They put Tulsa's basketball program on probation for the track team violations. No post season play. Now Memphis only has to sit out a player a few games "before" AAC starts and welcomes them to post season play even though Memphis admits to have gotten caught with a major donor giving $ 11,500 to a potential recruit's family.

How does the kid hire the best Lawyers and file a lawsuit in Memphis without having that kind of money?

Probably a loan from someone at arm's length from a prominent donor. The loaner would probably get 100% return on their money in a year.

The NCAA is warming up the sanction hammer as we speak

In the end the Weisman fiasco not only didn’t cost Memphis a thing but likely enabled them to sign a couple of high level recruits who wanted to play with him.
