Lost Restaurants of Tulsa

This isn’t a lost restaurant question but I’m hoping someone can solve a disagreement. My son and daughter-in-law visited Las Vegas last week so my wife and I drove down to see them. At one point in our visit Little Ceasers pizza was mentioned and I said that it wasn’t bad 40 years ago but I wouldn’t buy it now if I had other options. My son (who is 51) proceeded to say “40 years ago? Little Ceasers wasn’t even around then.” I told him that I used to get “pizza, pizza” often to feed him and his three siblings as we wre poor and it was cheap but he insisted that they weren’t in Tulsa until he was a teenager. A lot of googling lead to the company starting in 1959 but I was unable to find anything about Tulsa. Does anyone know when they opened in Tulsa. I know I was buying it in the early 80s and probably the late 70s.
They were in all 50 states aa of '87. Doesn't say they were in Tulsa in '87, but as put out by Huffy, they were likely here in '84. I'm willing to bet they were here in '85 or before based on those two pieces of evidence. They started franchising in '62. I remember them being here when I was in college or b4. I was a freshman in '87. My memory sucks, but I'll still put that out there.

You can call the Oklahoma Historical Society. They have a century of Tulsa phone books on microfilm and people waiting at a desk for people such as yourself to call and make obscure requests like when in the 1970’s did a pizza place open up.

Judging by the matchbooks in my junk drawer, Palermo's was a place we went to at least once, don't really remember. Also Shotgun Sam's, and Peppers used to be an after work happy hour hangout. The Fountains, had my first escargot there. And most of my favorites have already been mentioned in this years old thread, Charlie Mitchell's, Green Onion, Black Eyed Pea, and being from Texas- Luby's of course.
Hatfield's Burgers and BBQ, The Real McCoy!

I loved the black eyed pea. It seems family style restaurants like that are on the way out, soon it will be fast food or fancy with little in the middle.

Speaking of happy hour hangouts. Back when I was in my twenties, happy hour gatherings with co-workers and friends were a common occurance. They were great fun.
Do young people still get together after work with co-workers or friends?
Doesn’t seem like they do.

Thanks for your suggestion, I just sent them an email.

Palermo's was a pretty decent Italian restaurant in SE Tulsa (IIRC). I ate there a few times in the 80's.

The year after I graduated from TU (1978), I remember the Boston Avenue Market at 18th and Boston was a hip happy hour spot. There was a bar in a basement of an apartment building downtown that was cool but catered to a less upwardly mobile crowd. The Blue Rose was a nice place too.

The Brookside Bar at 33rd and Peoria sponsored our soccer team so we drank there quite a bit. Paying our league dues and part of our uniforms was a good investment for them. As I said, we drank there quite a bit.

I got an email today from the historical society. The first Little Caesar’s in Tulsa opened in September 1984 on South Memorial. A little later than I thought.

I'm hoping we don’t have another restaurant to add to the list.
I was at Cancun Mexican Restaurant, located at 7th and Lewis a few days ago after hearing they are going to be closing.
I spoke to the owner, I have known her for a long time.
She said she doesn't want to close, but business has fallen off so much. She said it's not worth being there 12 hours a day, six days a week.
As we all know, she said the cost of food and supplies has gone up so much. She has had to raise prices, which she thinks is one reason her business has slowed. I think her prices are very reasonable in today's market. She does have a lunch menu with slightly lower prices. I think the portions are also a little smaller.
She planning on closing no later than the end of June. Maybe mid June. She would like to stay open, but the amount of business doesn't justify staying open. She said both lunch and dinner are much slower than what use to be.
She been open since 1996.
The food has always been good. Probably the best salsa in Tulsa.
Go show them some love, she would like to remain open.
They are closed on Wednesday and close at 8:00pm the other six days.

I wanted to like that place. I was just never that impressed. If I remember right the food tasted alright, not phenomenal, and the food was a little greasy for my tastes. Only ate there 2 times I believe.

Aww, crap. I was not thinking about the right place. My brain just doesn't operate well at times. I just skimmed the post, and thought it said 1st. I was thinking of that place next door to the circle cinema, can't remember their name. Cancun is a place I don't eat at often enough. I will miss it, if it goes. Will visit their soon.

I agree with you. I went there twice, wasn't impressed either time.
If I'm in that area for Mexican. I'm going to Cancun or El Rio Verde.

Well at least they both start with Ca.... That's not much, but at least I can cling to that! 😁

the Original Coney Island, Brownies, A&W root beer on Peoria, Penningtons,, Trade Winds
All those places except Penningtons are still open. And it's Webers not A&W. And the Golden Drumstick has been mentioned several times in this thread already. You even mentioned Coney Island earlier in the post. What a tool.

Does anyone remember a place called Country Fare in the late 60's? My recollection is that it was on Harvard or Yale near 36th Street. Their specialty was pan fried chicken that took forever to prepare.

There was a BBQ place near 41st and Hudson in the 1970s - Sutphen’s BBQ. They were near Kelley high school near 41st and Hudson. Good ribs and onion rings.

The original Sutphen’s was in beautiful Borger, TX and although there’s still one there the current reviews aren’t good.
My father worked as a large meter superintendent for ONG. ONG had regular group meals there for employee gatherings and work related meetings. So my family went there on a regular basis as well.

Trying to remember where the original Goldie’s was located. Wasn’t there an adjacent par 3 golf course located adjacent to it? I seem to remember it near 52nd and Lewis.

I don't know which one was the original Goldie's, but the one you mention was the last one to close. I didn't think there were any left, but I started to look it up to see if that location said anything about it being the last one to close, and lo and behold... There is still 4 of them purported to be open. Three in the burbs of Owasso, BA, and Pryor, and one at 61st and just west of Sheridan. I don't get out that way much, guess I'll have to check that out.

The one in Owasso is still quite tasty.

Even though we lived a block south of Skelly Stadium, my father would always drive us to the Goldie’s at 41st and Memorial to eat.

is Jamil's still good since they had to move? Love their old location. I've moved since then

is Conner's corner still around?
