Well, I made it home. I havent uploaded all of the video footage I took, but for those who are interested, there are two videos up from me on the same account. The link below is some good footage of the crowd throwing urine, beer, coins, etc. There were a couple of cases of guys climbing over the barbed wire. The link has some footage of one guy unsuccessfully getting over the fence. The police did a good job of beating the crap out of him after a couple of the USA supporters knocked him off the fence.

All Gringos Must Die

So what happened if you needed to take a leak / buy a beer? Did they have a private restroom / concession stand for you? Was the entire concourse blocked off?

You are essentially in a bubble the whole time.

The bus was driven into a ring of about 200 riot police and we walked into the stadium surrounded by them. There are ramps built specifically for the visitors to enter, but the home fans can see you and can potentially jump or climb down onto your ramps, so there is a police escort the whole way.

Once you get to the top, we were frisked (but a quite lovely Mexican female police officer, btw) and walked through a barred gate that closed and locked behind us. In front of and behind the gate, guards are placed to keep you from leaving unescorted and keep the home fans out.

At both ends of the ramp into the stands there were riot police and a ring of riot police on each row around our entire section with double guards on the left and right.

You could go down the ramp to the bathroom, but there was no concessions and no exit.

Beer vendors made their way to us in our seats, but they were charging $8 a 24 oz cup -- about twice what they charge the home fans -- and almost nobody bought beer anyway. You either arrived so drunk you didnt want more or you wanted to keep your faculties together in such an environment.

I'd say there were paramedics available for one out of every eight American fans. Again, all of them shockingly beautiful if you prefer brunettes.

The seats/view were incredible. The sightlines were almost as good as Rice Stadium. /sarcasm.

We were on the second level, but you could see everything perfectly. I was easy to tell the players apart and we had a good view of the replay screen. The only negative was that the scoreboard wasnt always on, so it was difficult to tell the time elapsed. It got to the point where I think they took it off the replay screen so the American players wouldnt know how long they would have to hold on.

So it sounds pretty safe in the end. I've been to Mexico City several times for work and generally felt pretty safe. Might have to try this in 4 years....

I would not describe it as safe. Far from it. I saw a couple of guys with cuts in their foreheads, necks and shoulders from coins and rocks. I have a grapefruit sized bruise on my ribs from a rock as we went into the bus. But I didnt see anything that an hour trip to the hospital wouldnt fix. If you go, you must go with the understanding that you may get hurt and you may have to fight. You will certainly be hit with body fluid and other objects and have the self discipline not to respond.

An article in the New Yorker says that there were 4000 police in the stadium -- more than the Super Bowl. That sounds about right. But the cops give you a false sense of security. Watch that second video I posted -- the long one on the way out that is 9 minutes long. You'll see where a group of Mexican fans get within arms reach of me and are beaten back quickly. That doesnt always happen. Some Mexican police will allow Mexican fans to get in a few licks before doing anything and sometimes nothing at all. The police were outstanding from my perspective, but there were plenty of stories from other folks there saying the opposite.

Just be aware.

And let me know if you go. You're first beer is free at Boomer's -- the ex pat owned bar down the street from the hotel that is the pregame gathering place for US fans the night before.

+1000. The city was wonderful. I would move there. I rode the subway at night alone and felt right at home. No problems at all. Athens and Chicago made me much more uncomfortable.

Great stuff, man! I think it's neat that Gollum is a Mexico fan. The way he scaled that fence was tough stuff, lol
