I believe Haith was speaking in reference to having a smaller team that doesn't have imposing shot-blockers, so they will have to close out well and take charges when they can.I don’t know about this philosophy of protecting the rim by taking charges.
Pretty much all rules in all sports have been amended/changed/altered to positively impact the offense and scoring. It's happened in football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and even soccerThe meniscus surgery in the summer may be part of the reason his minutes were limited in the exhibitions. I don’t know about this philosophy of protecting the rim by taking charges. Perhaps they work on it extensively in practice?
