Apologies if this has been mentioned in a previous thread, but I've been waiting to bust out this stat for a few years now.

This is the first time that Tulsa football has made a bowl game in the same season that Tulsa basketball has made the NCAA Tournament. Hard to believe, but it's true.

Previously, Tulsa football made bowl games in five seasons where Tulsa basketball made postseason, but it was either the NIT or CBI, not the NCAAs:

1952-53: Gator/NIT
1989-90: Independence/NIT
2007-08: GMAC/CBI
2008-09: GMAC/NIT
2012-13: Liberty/CBI
2015-16: Independence/NCAA

This is Tulsa's 16th NCAA appearance and 29th overall postseason appearance.

So football and basketball can be good at the same time?

I hope this results in TU's first NCAA W since Dayton to wipe out the painful memories of the meltdown v. Wisky.
And, this hopefully will springboard the current staff to bigger better recruiting heights.

Wasn't our last at-large bid during the Bill Self era? CB you are THE historian....?

2002 in Phillips' first year.

I believe this is correct. Phillips also had an auto bid the next year when we won the WAC tournament in our third try as hosts at the Reynolds Center. We didn't go to the NCAA Tournament again until 2014 under Manning (auto bid for winning the C-USA Tournament).

Also, Frank Haith becomes the fifth Tulsa coach to take the program to the postseason in his first two seasons joining Nolan Richardson, J.D. Barnett, John Phillips, and Danny Manning.

Phillips should be asterisked. Anyone who posts on this board and Josh Pastner could have coached those 2 teams to the NCAA tournament

am I correct that only UH made the NIT? Memphis with its history SNUBBED?

It seems like 11 losses has to be the most for a TU at large bid. Also zero wins in the conference tournament and a bid must be a first too. It's good to be an American.

32 slots in the NIT, 15 taken by regular season conference champions who didn't get into the NCAA tournament. Memphis RPI despite their run to the championship game was still pretty low to be considered. What you did see in the NIT was Valpo and Monmouth getting #1 seeds. I didn't actually think the NIT field was too stacked with the usual suspects.

Good stuff Chad. This should have happened back in 1982. I certainly haven't forgotten the 1982 snub of (10-1) TU football, hence the "1982" in my screen name. That 1982 football team beat Air Force (35-17), OSU (25-15), Kansas (20-15), only loss was to #13 Arkansas (0-38). Air Force went (8-5) and was invited to the Hall of Fame Bowl

You mean "The Walking Probation", that Dan Dakich so classily described on national tv? ESPN is full of d-bags.

Self took TU to the elite eight in his second year I do believe.

3rd and final. Self's first year we missed the NCAA tournament because a certain player was incapable of hitting swim FTs down the stretch against UNM in the WAC tournament. Eric Coley missed about 6 games mid season. In Self's 2nd season we were a 9 seed and played College of Charleston in the 1st round and after winning that, went on the get hammered by Duke (who most everyone had penciled in as NCAA champion that year). Self's last year was the magical elite 8 season.

Thanks for the breakdown. I thought it was the second year but hey too much beer between then and now. He still belongs on that list though.

I'm baffled everytime I hear Dakich on ESPN. He is loud and non-cerebral.

He's a Big Ten panty thrower who's life is defined by playing for Bobby Knight.

Dan Wolken seems to be our only defender right now, oddly enough

Didn't Peterson take us to the nit in his one and only season here?

What does that question have to do with the content of this thread? The statement by Bonham was referring to bowl games and NCAA tourneys in the same season. We were not in a bowl game in the 2000 season, nor were we in the NCAA tourney.

It would have happened in 1982 if there had been 100 bowl games. :)
