Georgia State 1:30 PM Official Thread

I agree. Which is why it is so confusing. I can't imagine it is easier to recruit to LA Tech than it is to Tulsa.
All I can think of is, if you try to be a top 175 team, you recruit B level players, who aren't too hard to get so you can put together a coherent roster. But if you want to be a top 75 team, you recruit A- players, which are hard to get, and if you miss, you fall back on a mishmash of fill-ins, which seems to describe our roster.

La Tech, btw, is 7-0.

A close loss to a not-so-great opponent. At the beginning of the season, I actually thought TU could be 8-0 going into the OSU game. That euphoria went away and fast.

The team has a few holes. Inside game, half-court offense and rebounding. We live and die by the three and there ain't a Jimmy Chitwood in the bunch. They're also vulnerable to lapses on defense.

There is some hope because they are capable of playing inspired ball for stretches. Odom does a good job of firing the guys up. But they have to play at that level for much longer intervals. If they can, they can still have an above .500 year. As I wrote that it impressed upon me how much lower our expectations have become.

My expectations aren’t low like that. I still watch Tulsa basketball and expect to win. We’ve just got to hire a good coach for once.

That's not interesting.

My expectations are low now, which makes watching boring and unmotivating.

I simply don’t understand how Konkol can put together a winning program at a school with far fewer resources, but can’t do it in Tulsa. Like, I could understand if he had trouble getting over the hump in the age of NIL and being stuck around 20 wins, but not being able to compete with the mid to low tiers of the NCAA just astounds me.

I mean, he’s got kids from big name schools. He’s had kids who could set records in terms of scoring…. 4 star recruits out of HS…. Nothing seems to help. At a certain point I just have to think it’s something about coaching or culture.

You can watch it and see it’s coaching. Our offense is absolutely abysmal.

I’m a big Konkol fan. I wish things would have gone his way, but they haven’t.

For whatever reason, he has massively struggled building a well rounded and solid roster. Some could even argue he’s recruited the least amount of talent of any TU coach through year 3 (maybe Phillips was worse). Haggerty was a great get, though.

He needs good talent because he’s not a great bench coach. He just isn’t.

His La Tech experience started way different compared to TU. Coach White left him three years worth of talent. The pump was primed for him.

If I had to guess, I’d say this squad will get to 12 wins. However…right or wrong, I don’t think Konkol is close to being in trouble.

If we win 12 games he will absolutely be in trouble

Moore has already demonstrated that he is willing to pull the plug on a situation that does not indicate any long term (or short term for that matter) success. Sometimes a new broom has to sweep clean.

Manning lost interest after TU wouldn’t admit two Juco big men that didn’t meet academic standards.

They let it slide for Self on a few occasions.

The only hope for improving our inside game is if the lights suddenly switch on for Smickel. I have seen it before with freshmen and sophomores.
