An easier matchup comes the way of Texas football in Week 2 after an embarrassing 34-29 season-opening loss to the Maryland Terrapins.

It was a nightmare first week for the Texas football program to kick off the 2018 campaign. Coming into Week 1 as 13.5-point favorites over the Maryland Terrapins, the Longhorns fell drastically short of expectation. The five-point loss at the hands of the Terps could cost the Horns a spot in the top 25 rankings for the rest of the season, which is the same fate as last year.

As hard as it might for the players and the coaching staff, Texas has to turn its attention to Week 2 now. Coming off the loss to Maryland, the Horns are taking on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the home opener at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

In fact, it won’t be until Sep. 29 that the Horns won’t have a home matchup at DKR. Texas gets three straight opponents at home. Two of which should be ranked inside the top 25 when each comes to the Forty Acres. The USC Trojans and TCU Horned Frogs come to town directly after the home opener against Tulsa.

Moreover, this is a huge chance for the Horns to get off on the right foot at home at least. Any way you look at it, it’s massive for head Texas football coach Tom Herman to get back on the right track as soon as possible. Texas has a huge chance in Week 2 as 22-point favorites to open over the Golden Hurricane.

In Week 2, Texas is one of two teams from the Big 12 that takes on a team from the American Athletic Conference. The SMU Mustangs host TCU in a weeknight game on Sep. 6. And, Texas is one of four Big 12 teams that are more than 20 point favorites in the second full week of the season. The other three teams are the Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, and the Horned Frogs.

Last season, it was the San Jose State Spartans that faced the Horns in Week 2, and was the only Group of Five opponent Texas faced in 2017. This time around, it is the Phillip Montgomery coached Golden Hurricane that is trying to put its best effort forward against the Horns. Texas should be able to come out motivated and win big in a week where it’s much needed.
