Haywood did get 2 three pointers today so maybe that will get him over the hump. He does play pretty good D and he had 5 assists today. The competition might have been a step down but we did look better today. I was impressed with Shumate in his few minutes, he can climb the ladder and has great timing on his jump. He’s not that tall but looks like he could be a rim protector.
Obvious reason for the big win today compared to Kansas City. 41-28 margin on the boards. Three Seniors came out and played tough. Rashal, Joiner and Jackson. Best game for each. As good as Joiner and Rashal were, I would have to give the player of the game to Jackson. He came off the bench to keep the game close when we were being on the edge of getting blown out early. Then was everywhere from then on, even getting up near that triple-double atmosphere.
Joiner tremendous game today. Needs to keep shooting that open three and taking those drives. Great guard rebounding and very few silly mistakes like in KC.
Rashal the same. Always finds a way to score.
Idowu 8 rebounds and Ugboh 1.
And Finally....a few shots went down for Richie and Haywood. Both are capable but who can break out into a great shooting year ???????
Coach Haith: I will give him credit for subbing only one or two at a time this year and not breaking our momentum. That has been one of his downfalls the past few years. He did seem to get the players to look for cutters and make more passes to score today. The assists showed that.
Arkansas will be tough. We will find out if our team is the team of today or the team of Kansas City. Big time game.

Not so sure this is a step down in competition. UTA lost by 8 at both OSU and at Ark. On the other hand, having their 5th game in 10 days showed with a lack of energy in the second half. Once TU got a double digit lead, UTA folded. And, this team whipped us on the road by 14 last year.
Only disappointment was to see the end of the TU bench squander a 24 point lead to make the final score look closer than it was in the second half.

And, to my knowledge, the best opening game here in the entire Haith era.

Uta lost to Arkansas by 12 2 days ago and we could have won by 25 if we hadn’t unloaded the bench

Arkansas pretty much did what we did. Their game wasnt as close as the 12 point win indicates. They were up by 20 mid way through the 2nd half and just stopped caring basically.
Absolutely on Jackson.....Late first half, and all of the second half when he was in, we were a totally
different defensive team....They got one shot or none.....He makes such a huge difference......
Rachal....Really good situational awareness tonight....That guy at his best, is one of our greats...He
just sees things others don't....I really liked his game tonight.....
Between Richie and Haywood? I'm rooting for Haywood at the moment, because he does a good
job of playing both ends, and has a decent handle.....That, of course, might change...Richie may be
a little more versatile on the offensive end......
Idowu....Really impressive....He is better than his stats......
Tonight, especially in the second half, was a positive step in the right direction......

Haywood is a good defender so I understand Haith trying to get him minutes to relax and hopefully hitting some 3's. I just wish he would learn what a good shot is and stop with the 30 foot shots.
Overall, strong second half and as I have said, this team which is guard oriented and guard heavy needs to shoot 30+% from the 3 to compete.
Rebounding is improving and I think we will eventually be ok in this area.
Our defense is so helter skelter leaving wide open 3's. Need to tighten that area up.
I agree on Vanover. I think we recruited him hard but Musselman is really good at snagging transfers.
Like being negative much. I'll let your past references answer that. The Phipps and the Thompsen were related.
Is it just me, or are we more aggressive offensively when we play man defense.....It
seems every thing is better.....Our defensive rebounding for sure, our transitions,
our offensive movement, our spacing, etal......Logically, it makes sense....You move
more playing man on the defensive end, and you tend to move more on the offensive
end.....
It appears we will play quite a bit of man, at least in the near term.....Haith seemed
to suggest that our newer players haven't learned the match-up well enough yet....
This Covid mandated break will not help.....No practice sessions in the short run, and
a loss of much needed game experience....
One last thing happens when we play man....The uncontested three's are substantially
reduced....I.I. and I like that!
