Some may wonder what the strange play call at the end of the Super Bowl to throw it from the half yard line has to do with TU football, but I for one immediately flashed back to the Notre Dame game when Kelly calls a pass play instead of kicking a chip shot field goal to beat us. Of course, Flanders makes one of the few plays of his TU career & intercepts in the end zone & becomes semi-immortal in TU football history. Did anyone else think of this? TU Football: 1st,last,always!

I noticed several tweets to that effect too.

Last night's play call was much worse. The 2nd worst coaching decision last night was NE letting Seattle run off 30 seconds before that throw. Amazingly dumb coaching moves by 2 of the best coaches in the NFL !

As far as TU-ND, the late ND pass wasn't that dumb. TU missed a FG on the same end earlier. We were at the game. The wind was blowing diagonally across the field & it blew TU's kick wide. Yes, a 35 yd FG should be routine, but it wasn't a slam dunk make under those conditions, with the game on the line.

First off, that is the first thing I compared last night's decision to and tweeted and posted on FB about it...I was in the stands at Notre Dame that day. Need to remember they had a kicker who had NEVER missed a single kick, FG or PAT EVER, to that point. It would have been about 36 yards. Kelly's arrogance was the reason they threw the ball in that situation. Notre Dame fans were livid.

I was shocked Pete Carroll/Seattle OC made that decision with Lynch there. Of course hindsight is 20/20.

I am a Patriots fan so I am not at all disappointed with Seattle's decision.

Interestingly enough I saw some stats later...Lynch had not scored on a 1 yd TD run this season, something like 0-6. Teams scored 66 TDs on passes from the 1 yd line this season versus only 1 INT thrown. That 1 INT was last night's.

Hey, BLA-you gotta be from Massachusettes, right? I was born in Worcester & have been a lifelong Celtics fan( & I know you are too) I go back to the late fifties with Cousy & Russell, the Jones boys,Tommy"the gunner" Heinsohn, Satch Sanders,Jungle Jim Luscatoff,Lovellette, & a very young John Havlicek(maybe? the greatest of them all). It's been very hard lately to be a Celtics fan & hell to be a Patiots fan until Belicek & Brady came along.

BLA, Not sure if you read my entire post, I was at the ND game, too. I knew the ND kicker's rep. Nothing you posted was news to me. I still say last night's decision was worse. We have different opinions on this.

Horrible call. I don't have a problem with throwing the ball (but I wouldn't have done it on second down given a reasonable amount success they had running the ball). But the pass was very high risk on a compressed field.

One thing I will say is that it was unpredictable.

If you recall, earlier in the game after the first ND td, their extra point was blocked and we returned it for 2 points. so, the kicker was not perfect before the late int.

I'm a Pats fan. I loved Carroll trying to pass!

# of NFL teams this season threw 66 TD passes
with 1 INT on passes from the 1-yard line.
That 1 INT was ... well ... in the Super Bowl.

Here's an interesting take on the trend in the NFL
of throwing more than running once inside the 10 yard line

Pass or Run?

Quincy, I grew up in New Bedford and have been a lifelong fan of all Boston teams, of course Sox have had me since I was about 3 and Fisk hit the HR in game 6. Lived across from Fenway for a couple yrs in college before I transferred to TU. My first Pats game in person was in '85 against the Bengals when Robert Weathers broke a 4th and inches for 40 yds and a game and playoff clinching TD. I was also there for a late season game against the Dolphins in '89 and it was about 10 degrees out. My HS band was the halftime entertainment. Trumpet valves froze and our frozen crew made ESPN because there were only about 20,000 people there. We had the entire S end zone to ourselves.

Hooter, they added to that stat today. NFL teams threw a total of 109 passes from the 1 yd line....still only the one INT from last nights game

All of you NE guys (or Pats fans) are going to love a project Ash and I are working on that has direct ties to the Patriots and a past Super Bowl. Looking forward to sharing it with the board when things are closer to being finished later this spring.
