Looks like a bunch of young Chinese university kids beat the socks off of USA's best silicon valley companies including OpenAI, Meta, and X. We've been pouring money into this area of research and were outclassed where necessity breeds opportunity. This is concerning and has political implications if the US can't get its act together in terms of innovation.
To put more emphasis on it... this wasn't just a case of intellectual property theft... they really showed ingenuity in advancing farther, faster, and cheaper than we have been able to.
