My now wife and I were in MA for a wedding shower my family was throwing for us when this game was happening. And we were just watching the ticker at the bottom of the ESPN crawl for score updates (no really radio or internet streaming back then). And then watched the Sportscenter highlights because we were ranked and they always show the highlights of the ranked teams. If we hadn't been in MA, there's a high probability we would have been in Moody for the game and doing the "Jeeeerrrrryl" chant.TU @ SMU:
2000 was the one that hurt a lot. I didn't even think UNC belonged in the tournament to be honest. And they still fired Guthridge not long after. And UNC did us a huge favor knocking off Stanford who would have been a tall order for us (literally and figuratively). 2003 was a microcosm of having a head coach who would have been the equivalent of Penny Hardaway today. Completely in over his head when it came to x's and o's and it was compounded by his inability to recruit anyone decent. We won a lot of games in 2002/2003 on talent alone, Phillips was just a suit on the sideline. We had a final four quality team in 1982 but ran into a Houston team that was able to play a warmup game in the first round and played our Worst game of the year, I’m still convinced that bye hurt us. In 2000 we again had a bad shooting game in the regional final. A decent game and it’s a final four trip. Then in 2002 (or 03) we lose in the second round on a last minute 3-pointer by a Wisconsin player who hardly ever shot threes. We win that game, which we dominated, and the path to the final four looked reasonably easy. So in my opinion we should have had two, possibly three, final fours on our resume instead of none.
