TULSA, Okla. –– With 13 days prior to Tulsa's season opening Thursday Night Game against Cal Davis, the Golden Hurricane had its second and final scrimmage of preseason camp on Saturday morning.

A delayed start due to a downpour, the Hurricane had a 119-play scrimmage on the turf of H.A. Chapman Stadium.

"We had a lot of quick whistles today, and that's smart for us. I was really pleased to see Shamari with a long run. He's had a couple of those in practices, but it was good to see him have another one in more live-game action," said Head Coach Philip Montgomery.

"I thought the defense really played extremely well. Offensively, it was hit and miss at times. I think we had a lot mor big plays than what it looks like just because your blowing whistles and momentum changes a lot when you do that."

"I think we have a good football team," added Montgomery.

"We just have to keep growing and coming together. I know our guys are ready to hit someone other than ourselves.

Montgomery talked about how every year that teams are ready for that next step, the first opponent.

"It's like that every year. You love fall camp and you love getting on the field, but you've gone against each other so much. It's just hard. They're ready to do something different, see something different, see someone new and that's what I talked to our team about… now it's about who we're playing and it's us coming together and that's what's going to make our football team.

Montgomery expanded on how he feels his team has progressed.

"I feel good about where we are and I've seen enough in the practices of where we are. We're not going to show everything when we come out. I feel good about it. I think we still have a lot of room to grow offensively. I didn't think our tempo was very good today. There's a lot of areas we have to get better in, but going against our defense, It's a tough defense, you have to work for yardage and that's a good thing for us as a team," Montgomery said.

Tulsa will have a short practice on Sunday, begin classes on Monday and be back on the practice field Tuesday afternoon.
