Junior F DaQuan Jeffries

A late bloomer who often played out of position in high school, Jeffries was mostly known as an athletic defensive specialist who threw down a couple highlight reel dunks per game, but 55 points in 3 state tournament games earned him a late offer from Scott Sutton and he almost immediately signed with ORU. Jeffries rarely started, but regularly logged 15-20 minutes per game and scored with incredible efficiency with above average shooting percentages in all 3 categories and more assists than turnovers. Last year, Jeffries largely replicated those numbers (sans the 3PT%) with much higher volume as the best player on his juco team.

Full disclosure, I'm a sucker for guys like this. Jeffries' offensive game is primarily dunks and threes, but he's excellent at driving to the rim and finishing or making his free throws. Defensively, a deceptively long wingspan allows him to cut into passing lanes and block shots even when the footwork isn't perfect. My guess is that Jeffries spends a good chunk of time at the 4 out of necessity, but he's the quintessential 3 at this level. I'm a little uneasy with the shooting percentages that my model spit out, but Jeffries has shot above 62% inside the arc at every level in his career including a ridiculous 73.5% inside the arc last year in juco.

Random stat: Jeffries is 1 of only 3 freshman in the past 10 years to play more than 500 minutes and shoot better than 62% inside the arc, 39% outside the arc, and 78% from the line.

2018 proj.: 28.2 mpg, 11.2ppg, 7.0rpg, 1.1apg, 0.7spg, 0.9topg, 0.9bpg, 64.3% 2PT, 41.0% 3PT, 83.5% FT

I hope he hits those percentages. If he plays 28+ minutes per game with those percentages I would expect a 15+ ppg average rather than 11. I honestly haven’t seen much of Jeffries but all I hear from others excites me. I don’t remember him from the ORU game two years ago but then I seldom remember opponents players unless they were so dominant that I can’t forget them.

I thought about that, but Jeffries has always been a low-volume shooter at every stop. Even as the best player on a mediocre juco team last year, he finished 7th in shots per minute. He's not a guy who forces bad shots. I wouldn't be shocked if he has a lot of games scoring 10 points on 5 shots this year.

I'm wondering if that was just a product of Jeffries being a freshman under Sutton and then being the best player on a JUCO team where the other team could key on him every game.

The team Birt played on and the team Jeffries played on were very different. Birt's team had that guard who went to ASU and there was a weird competition between him and Birt. That team was actually pretty good and established in the JUCO world.

Jefferies won some big games last year, but played on a team with no other prospects that I could see. He had a prior relationship with the coach and I think he was established as the guy. I'm not sure it was an issue of the defenses he saw so much as the team was just too stupid to give him the ball. They weren't good. It was like watching a high school team that has one stellar player.

On second thought, maybe I was too conservative. Through 4 games, Jeffries is shooting 84% 2PT, 63% 3PT, 78% FT.

I like his stats and he battles for rebounds as well and I believe got a steal or two out here. Question is can he stay consistent. If he does then we will be dangerous

The biggest surprise for me on Jeffries is his 3pt shot. Great percentage early and his form and release are really good too.

I thought your 41% from 3 was too high, so far I’m very wrong, and I suspect by season end I will be wrong too.

He is very selective and will only take wide open 3s so far. If he could make them regularly with a hand in his face he would be unstoppable.

Guy was also intimidating other team"s 7 footer with his shot blocking ability.

Those are ridiculous. With those stats, Haith should REQUIRE him to take more shots until either those numbers come way down or TU goes undefeated. It's like a running back averaging 10 yards per carry.. he's not getting the ball enough.
