Tulsa Hosts East Carolina on Tuesday Evening

TULSA, Okla. ––
The University of Tulsa men’s basketball team welcomes East Carolina to the Donald W. Reynolds Center for an American Athletic Conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon.

Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. (CT) on ESPN+. Josh Haley will provide the play-by-play, and Alvin “Pooh” Williamson will serve as the analyst for the matchup. Fans can also catch Bruce Howard and J.R. Rollo on Big Country 99.5 FM.

The Golden Hurricane (7-14, 1-9 The American) enter Tuesday’s contest after a short two-game road trip ending with a 67-58 loss at Temple on Saturday afternoon.

The Hurricane fought back from a double-digit deficit in the second half to take the lead with six minutes to play. However, Tulsa couldn’t find the big shot it needed, and Temple was able to take advantage of a few mistakes to pull away in the end.

Rey Idowu went a perfect 8-of-8 from the field and knocked down five free throws to set a career-high with 21 points. Sam Griffin and Jeriah Horne finished in double figures with 11 and 10 respectively.

Tulsa outshot the Owls 44-41 percent, but the turnover battle proved costly as the Hurricane turned it over 16 times to Temple’s seven and were outscored 19-6 in points off turnovers.

East Carolina (11-11, 2-8 AAC) visits Tulsa having lost its past six games after beating the Memphis Tigers with a buzzer beater on Jan. 15. In its most recent matchup, the Pirates fell at Tulane 86-66.

ECU’s defense allowed 11 first half 3-pointers and Tulane finished with 14 made threes for the game. The Pirates trailed by 23 at half and were never able to find their way back into the game. Vance Jackson had a game-high 27 points with seven 3-pointers. Tristen Newton paced the team with nine rebounds and added 12 points.

Tuesday marks the 27th meeting in a series Tulsa leads 23-3. The Hurricane are 11-1 at home against the Pirates and 10-1 in the Reynolds series with the only loss coming on Feb. 20, 2013, 72-63. TU has won eight straight in the series and have only lost once to ECU since both teams have joined The American.

Last season with the pandemic, Tulsa and ECU only met once, a 77-68 Hurricane win in Greenville, N.C. on Jan. 30, 2021. Idowu scored 16 points on 70 percent shooting, pulled down eight rebounds, dished out two assists and had a block and steal in the win.

Griffin paces the Hurricane in scoring this season, averaging 15.9 points per game. Right behind him is Horne, who puts up 15.8 a night and leads the team with 6.9 rebounds a game. His rebounding is third best in the conference and he leads the conference in defensive rebounds per game (5.6).

The Hurricane’s newcomers have contributed in a big way this season. Seven Tulsa players are in their first season with the program and have combined to score 44.5 percent (631) of Tulsa’s 1417 points. In addition, they’ve dished out 50.6 percent of the team’s 243 assists (123). Anthony Pritchard is responsible for 25 percent of the team’s assists by himself (61).

While Horne has played at the University of Tulsa, he is a newcomer to this roster after spending a year in Colorado. With his contributions, players who weren’t on the roster a season ago have contributed 67.9 percent of Tulsa’s points (962).

East Carolina is paced by Newton’s 17.5 points per game and Jackson’s 13.2. Jackson has been a strong contributor in conference play, averaging 16.1 points in The American games. Brandon Suggs is the other Pirate to average double figure scoring with 10.1. Jackson and Brandon Johnson each pull down 6.3 rebounds per game to lead the team. Newton also has dished out 107 assists, which ranks him second in the conference and 48th in the country.

After Tuesday’s matchup, Tulsa faces Cincinnati on Saturday as the second game of a doubleheader with the women’s team for Legends Day before going on the road for a final four-game trip. Tipoff for Saturday is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
