Golden Hurricane Men’s Basketball Announces 2022-23 Schedule

TULSA, Okla
. –– The University of Tulsa men’s basketball team announced on Wednesday afternoon it’s schedule for the 2022-23 campaign.

The Golden Hurricane will play a 29-game slate with 11 nonconference opponents and 18 conference contests. The nonconference slate will see Tulsa take on opponents from the Big XII, Pac-12, West Coast Conference, MAC, The Summit, A-10, SWAC and Horizon with the potential for others.

“We have a competitive, strong home and away nonconference schedule,” Tulsa basketball head coach Eric Konkol said. “We are able to play in a tremendous tournament and get that back-to-back postseason type feel where you’re playing high-quality opponents at a neutral site. We have some challenging road games right away in the season and then we’ve got some teams who are coming here to the Reynolds Center who have been good in their conference and are looking to have strong seasons as well.”

Tulsa’s schedule includes games against three teams who made the NCAA Tournament in Loyola Chicago, Houston and Memphis, with the possibility of playing Boise State in the second round of the Myrtle Beach Invitational. SMU represented The American in the NIT, making it to the second round.

Five of the teams Tulsa will face finished in the top 75 of the final NET rankings, which includes Houston (2), Loyola Chicago (28), Memphis (31), Oklahoma State (45) and SMU (53).

The Eric Konkol era will officially begin on the road at Oregon State on Nov. 7. The Hurricane handed the Beavers a loss a season ago at the Donald W. Reynolds Center and will look to repeat the feat at Gill Coliseum.

Tulsa’s home opener is Nov. 12 as the Hurricane take on Jackson State, but it will be the lone game at home until December. TU will head to South Carolina for the Myrtle Beach Invitational, playing a three-game schedule starting Nov. 17 against Loyola University Chicago. The Hurricane will face either Boise State of the Mountain West or Charlotte of Conference USA the next night before finishing the tournament on the 20th.

After a break for the Thanksgiving holiday, fans can extend the celebration as the Hurricane travels west on US-412 for a Black Friday showdown with Oklahoma State in Stillwater. It will be the first meeting between the two in-state programs since 2018, a 74-71 Tulsa victory in the Reynolds Center.

“Setting up a three-game series with Oklahoma State is really positive. We’re starting at their place, and then going to Oklahoma City to play at the Paycom Center in an NBA arena before coming here to the Reynolds Center. I think it’s great for the state of Oklahoma and for basketball fans.”

Keeping things in-state, Tulsa returns home to host Oral Roberts for the Mayor’s Cup on Dec. 3, kicking off a four-game homestand. The Hurricane will look to get back on track against a Golden Eagles team it leads 37-20 all-time.

Detroit Mercy (Dec. 7) and Tulsa will meet for the first time since 1961, while Central Michigan (Dec. 10) and the Hurricane will meet for the first time ever on the hardwood. Mississippi Valley State (Dec. 16) and Tulsa face off for the third time with Tulsa winning the two previous matchups in 1991 and 2007.

The Hurricane will close the non-conference schedule with the return game against Loyola Marymount on Dec. 21 in Los Angeles, Calif. Tulsa is 4-1 against the Lions and 1-0 on the road, taking a 79-45 victory in 2008.

After Christmas, Tulsa will tip-off the league schedule on Dec. 28 with its final home matchup against Houston as conference members. A season ago, Tulsa came within two points of upsetting the highly ranked Cougars at home in consecutive seasons. Houston went on on to make the Elite Eight before falling to Villanova last year.

“When we look to the conference season, the American is one of the best leagues in the country,” Konkol said. “Our fans are going to see some great games in the Reynolds Center, and we are excited about having them join us many times this season.”

The Hurricane will ring in the new year on the road with games at SMU on Jan. 1 and Tulane on the 4th. Tulsa will return for a quick home game on the 10th as Temple comes to town before the Hurricane and Wichita State play the next iteration of their longstanding rivalry in Wichita, Kan. on Jan. 14.

Tulsa will play host to SMU (Jan. 18) and Tulane (Jan. 21) before heading back to the Carolinas for a showdown with East Carolina on Jan. 24, looking to avenge the first back-to-back losses against the Pirates last season.

The Hurricane will then play its one-and-done games as Memphis visits on Jan. 29 and then Tulsa travels to face Cincinnati on Feb. 1, bringing an end to the regular season matchups as conference mates with the Bearcats.

Wichita State and Tulsa will meet again in the Reynolds Center on Feb. 5 before three road games in four contests. Tulsa hosts South Florida (Feb. 15) at the Reynolds Center, sandwiched between a two-game road trip at Houston (Feb. 8) and UCF (Feb. 11), and then a clash with Temple on Feb. 19.

Tulsa will return home for its final homestand, hosting East Carolina on Feb. 21 and UCF on Feb. 26 for Senior Night for the second consecutive season. Fans will remember last season’s senior night festivities celebrated with Jeriah Horne’s buzzer beater from beyond half court to beat the Knights.

The Golden Hurricane will finish the 2022-23 regular season campaign on the road at South Florida on March 1. A week later, the conference teams will meet at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas for The American Athletic Conference Championship. The tournament will start on the 9th and culminate with the championship game on March 12.
