I read this on an Al McGuire website. I didn’t realize the last game he called was Tulsa and College of Charleston.

“I worked with Al McGuire his last year of the tournament (1999). And Coach McGuire was never known for the depth of his preparation. As in, ‘I’ll react to what’s going on.’ And that Thursday or Friday is the longest day in broadcast television. It is. It’s a grind. I can still tell you the teams. We were in Charlotte. We lead off with Delaware and Tennessee. Get that done. Then we’ve got Southwest Missouri State and Wisconsin in what I would still argue is one of the worst college basketball games I’ve ever done. Like, 42-31, and that was at the end of the game. So now we get a short break. My pile (of papers) is going down. You take half of it and throw it away. The evening game was Mississippi Valley State and Duke, and Duke was a 48-point favorite, and they covered. So the last game of the night is College of Charleston and Tulsa. We’re taking a break and I said, ‘Coach, anything I can do for you in this last game?’ And he said, ‘No, no.’ We get back and sit down. He doesn’t have a note. He doesn’t have a roster. And I said, ‘Is there anything I can do to help you out?’ He said, ‘No, no—they’ll take their warmups off and I’ll get the names and numbers, and I’ll listen to you for the first five minutes, and I’ll pick things up and I’ll be fine.’ Charleston comes out and they have maroon warmups. They take them off and they have no names, just numbers. Tulsa, with Bill Self as the coach, comes out in blue—no names. McGuire looked at me and said, ‘Son, you might have to help me—I think I’m screwed.’”

According to Wikipedia then last game he called was in March 2000. Great Story but it was probably last game of the night and not last game of career.

"He announced his retirement from broadcasting after calling a matchup between Wisconsin and Indiana on March 5, 2000.[14]"

I was at this game. TU had a huge lead over COC with little time left and almost lost the game. Self looked like a deer in the headlights during that time as he still was very early in his career. We got to play probably the best Duke team in history 2 days later.

Some interesting factoids regarding our final 3 games of that season:

TU lost in OT to Utah in the semi's of the WAC tournament. It was the Ute's 21st consecutive win in a streak that would reach 23. Utah was coached by College Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Rick Majerus.

TU's first round NCAA victory over CoC snapped the Cougars 25 game win streak. CoC was coached by the legendary John Kresse.

Duke killed us in the second round to extend their winning streak to 29, a streak that would extend to 32 before losing in the championship game to UConn. Duke's coach was, of course, Mike Krzyzewski.

I remember pretty much knowing we were going to be either an 8 or 9 seed in this tournament and they announced the Duke game and Duke as the top overall seed in the tournament and me and a friend were in Vegas for the selection show and we're at the MGM Sportsbook watching and just kept saying "Please not us please not us" understanding that the only #1 seed that was a complete mismatch against any 8/9 seed that year was Duke. That team was just ridiculous. I mean, Shane Battier, Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Trajan Langdon.

The fact that UCONN beat them for the title was one of the biggest upsets in the history of college basketball. Look at Duke's results that season, they lost an early game to Cincinnati by 2 in Alaska and they only played like 3 games that finished within single digits margins the rest of the season. They were beating the majority of the ACC by 20+ points and many that were 30+ pts. No one wanted to play them that season.

The funniest thing about the College of Charleston game was when TU had a big lead and Eric Coley jumped over the press table right by Al, and when Coley was climbing back over the table, Al grabbed Coley's hand and said something like, "Eric, you're the man!", and Coley smiled.

I think it wasn't long after that when TU starts losing it's huge lead.
