FORT WORTH, Texas –– The University of Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins was named the Walter Camp FBS National Defensive Player of the Week presented by Generation UCAN, it was announced today by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Collins is the first Tulsa player to earn Walter Camp Defensive National Player of the Week honors since 2005.

Collins, the 6'4" junior from Hominy, Okla., had a game-high and season-best 15 tackles (8 solo) and 0.5 tackles for loss, and recorded one interception which he returned 96 yards for a game-winning touchdown in overtime as 25th-ranked Tulsa (5-1) defeated Tulane, 30-24.

Tulsa scored 21 points in the 4th quarter and nine more in overtime for the win that moved the Golden Hurricane to 5-0 in American Athletic Conference play.

The national defensive player of the week award is the third for Collins this year. He earned the Chuck Bednarik National Defensive Player of the Week award for his season-opening performance against No. 11 Oklahoma State and was named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week last week in Tulsa's come-back win over 19th-ranked SMU.

This is the 17th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation honors one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.

He will take away all defensive honors for the year. We have the best defensive/linebacker player of the entire NCAA, and they are actually recognizing it!!! Love and recognition like this come around hardly ever. Special player, wish he would be back next year, but he'll be playing for another team, on Sundays in 2021. Would be surprised if he didn't go in the first round.

He should be the first defensive player drafted. Guy is big, fast, and smart. I also wish he would come back the next two years since this one didn't count...

With the extra year for many, what does this do to individual records? Will there be an asterisk beside their name stating they played 5 years? Statistics in all sports will be inflated.
