From Texas Hoops a few days ago...TU showing interest...
From Midway High School, Jesse Furlong made a name for himself after a successful Great American Shoot-Out circuit which started back in the spring. The 6-foot-8 interior player improved every tournament and eventually was ranked by TexasHoops.com (No.57), in the class of 2017.
While suiting up for the Centex Elites out of the Waco area, Furlong was able to showcase his abilities in front of college coaches and has collected one offer and other interest.
Furlong visited the campus of the Sam Houston State Bearkats Wednesday and came away with an offer.
"It was a great experience for my first visit," said Furlong. "It was exciting and coach (Chris) Mudge showed me around the campus and the facilities.
"He took me to the Bussiness School and I talked to an advisor there. I am interested in Accounting so it was nice to talk with someone that gave me really good insight."
On his visit, Furlong was able to catch the Bearkats practice, and he saw quickly how intense it was.
"I saw how the bigs worked out and the type of drills they put them through. I was able to see a different side to the game and the high level in which they go at it. They work a lot on exploding to the basket, being strong with the ball and being physical."
Furlong also had the opportunity to talk one on one with head coach Jason Hooten. Furlong said that Hooten wanted him to know that the staff really likes him as a player and sees him as a player that will be able to be a force at their level.
"Coach Hooten was a really nice guy and talked to me about the basketball program. I feel really honored to have an offer from a program that is competitive and sees that I can help and be an impact player one day for them."
Next up for Furlong is a visit to SFA next Thursday. As for this attention he is getting, Furlong isn't shy to say that he likes it.
"I can't lie, it is fun talking with coaches and getting calls and letters. It's what I am working hard for and I knew that this day would come, but didn't think this soon. My teammates and I had a great summer and it has paid off for many of us."
Furlong is receiving interest from Texas State, Lamar, Middle Tennessee State, and Tulsa.
Texas Hoops Analysis: JESSE is a developing big-man that has steadily progressed over the past four months. He has an active body and plays with energy. He runs the floor and will get to the block to score, but can extend out to the high post area and hit his jumpers. He has a good frame and will rebound.
