Cal Baptist and ORU play each other this evening. Tulsa plays Cal Baptist this Friday (Nov. 16) and at ORU on December 22.
This is apparently Cal Baptist's first season as Division I. They were supposed to open their season against Cal State Northridge (also a D-I school) but Northridge changed its schedule during the summer, so Cal Baptist's opener was against NAIA opponent San Diego Christian. Cal Baptist won 87-71.
At first I thought, why would a D-I school put an NAIA team on their schedule...but it's their first season in D-I, so I get it. But then I saw that ORU played the Southwestern Moundbuilders from Winfield, KS...also a NAIA school. ORU won 79-62.
Beating a NAIA school by less than 20 points doesn't instill much confidence...will be interesting to see what happens when Cal Baptist and ORU match up tonight.
Does anyone remember Tulsa having any NAIA teams on the regular-season schedule in the past 15 years or so? I don't remember any...but maybe I'm just forgetting.
