TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa athletics department announced today community-wide initiatives surrounding the two September home football games for the Golden Hurricane.
The Sept. 1 game against the Central Arkansas Bears has been dubbed as the For Our City – Hometown Heroes Game. TU will honor police, fire and EMT personnel from Tulsa and the surrounding communities. The Sept. 15 contest against Arkansas State is the Alzheimer's Awareness Game. It marks the second consecutive season that TU football has joined the Fight Against Alzheimer's.
Both games have a kickoff time of 6:00 p.m. at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
"Tulsa football became a rallying point for the greater Tulsa community ever since playing its first game in Tulsa city limits in 1908. TU and its athletics teams have been a huge part of the community for more than 100 years," said Tulsa's Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Derrick Gragg.
"The For Our City campaign is more than simply a marketing slogan or tagline. In our view, For Our City represents our commitment to engaging and deepening our relationship with Tulsa and surrounding communities through athletics," added Gragg.
"It's only appropriate that we take steps to really honor and recognize our police, fire and EMT personnel. We plan to honor our 'Hometown Heroes' at the season opener," said Gragg. "The Alzheimer's Association is an organization that our football program has become a very huge part of, and once again we want to help bring attention to a disease that has more than likely touched a family member or friend of each of us."
On Sept. 1, the For Our City – Hometown Heroes Game will feature the following for the police, fire and EMT personnel of our local communities:
• Tickets to the game
• Pre-Game tailgate and meal for all local heroes on Chapman Commons
• Cains on Chapman Commons Pre-Game Concert Series (band to be named later)
• #ForOurCity T-shirts for local police, fire and EMT personnel, as well as the first
1,000 fans
• In-Game recognition
• Post-game Fireworks
The season opener is also a WHITE-OUT where fans are asked to wear white to the game in support of the Golden Hurricane.
The Alzheimer's Awareness Game will focus on bringing awareness to the disease that has afflicted many families within our communities.
The Alzheimer's Walk will take place on the TU campus earlier in the day of Sept. 15. Participants in the Walk Against Alzheimer's will receive:
• Tickets to the game
• Pre-Game tailgate for Walkers
• Cains on Chapman Commons Pre-Game Concert Series (band to be named later)
"It is our goal that fans will purchase game tickets and come out to honor our police, fire and EMT at the UCA game, while returning two weeks later to help our Fight Against Alzheimer's," said Tulsa football coach Philip Montgomery.
"The University of Tulsa has long been a major contributor to our local community as one of Tulsa's largest employers and community outreach partners. TU student-athletes shine a light on our community as they take the Tulsa name across the nation, while also giving national television audiences a glimpse of the Tulsa community when playing at home," said Mayor Bynum. "I hope that the community will come together to support our hometown heroes, help the fight against Alzheimer's and support our Hometown Team these two Saturdays in September."
Fans can purchase single-game tickets beginning Saturday, August 18 online at TulsaHurricane.com. Fans wanting to purchase tickets by calling 918.631.GoTU (4688) or in person at the Donald W. Reynolds Center Athletic Ticket Office on the TU campus can do so beginning Monday August 20. Ticket office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Season tickets, Mazzio's Family Fun Zone tickets, the All-Sports Flexbook and Group Ticket packages are still available for purchase.
